(Maastricht, 1653 - Roma, 1695) Vaso fiorito Olio su tela, cm 117X83 Giunto a Roma nel 1674, l'artista sviluppò una originale interpretazione della pittura floreale concependo una felice sintesi tra il lenticolare naturalismo nordico e l'esuberanza barocca, condotta in particolare da Mario Nuzzi. Il suo talento fu presto apprezzato dalla raffinata committenza della città Eterna e la sua bottega, situata nei pressi di piazza di Spagna, frequentata da allievi e copisti, divenne il luogo d'incontro abituale per numerosi colleghi 'oltremontani', tra i quali Jan Frans van Bloemen, Christian Reder e Anthoni Schoonjans. A uno dei collaboratori del Maestro si può quindi ricondurre la tela in esame, esempio quanto mai tipico dell'arte naturamortistica capitolina di fine Seicento. Bibliografia di riferimento: Y. Karel Van Vogelaer (Maastricht 1653 - Roma 1695) attribuito Volto della Vergine entro ghirlanda di fiori Olio su rame 23,5 x 18,5 cm Karel giunse in Italia intorno al 1674, tornando da viaggi di studio nelle Fiandre ed in Francia, prese residenza a Roma, dove si specializzò nella pittura di tematica floreale. Stilisticamente fu abile a trovar la sintesi tra la meticolosità nordica e l'esuberanza della visione romana di queste rappresentazioni pittoriche, capitanate da Mario Nuzzi, detto de' Fiori e i fratelli Stanchi. Fu amico di molti artisti nordici presenti a Roma, come il paesaggista Jan Frans van Bloemen, il battaglista e pittore di scene popolari Christian Reder e Anthoni Schoonjans, ritrattista. Instaurò collaborazioni professionali anche con pittori di figura italiani, come Carlo Maratti, Giovan Battista Gaulli e Luigi Garzi. PAAR BLUMENSTILLLEBEN Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 65 x 50 cm. In gekehltem ornamental verziertem Rahmen. Vor unbestimmtem Grund, der einzig durch einen Lichtschein auf eine Tischplatte näher bestimmt wird, steht jeweils eine Vase, die auf einem Trompetenfuß ruht und ein dicht gefülltes Blumenbouquet beinhaltet, das Blätter und Blüten unterscheidlicher Couleur und Dichte in sich trägt. Anmerkung: Ein ähnliches Gemälde wurde zum Beispiel am 8. Dezember 2010 bei Bonhams, London, als Lot 82 angeboten. Der in Italien tätige und dort bekannt gewordene flämische Maler hat sich spätestens um 1683 in Rom niedergelassen und war bald so erfolgreich, dass er für bekannte römische Adelsfamilien wirken konnte, wie etwa die Pallavicini. Es ist bekannt, dass er mit Künstlern mit Carlo Maratta zusammengearbeitet hat, mit denen er zu den bedeutenden Blumenmalern des 17. GROSSES BLUMENSTILLEBEN MIT OBST UND ERLEGTEN WILDVÖGELN Öl auf Leinwand. 137 x 103 cm. Das Gemälde dürfte stilistisch in die Zeit um 1690 einzuordnen sein. Das Gemälde zeigt im Zentrum eine große, antikisierende Tonvase mit Figurenrelief und hochziehenden Amphorenhenkeln, in die ein großer, hochziehender Blumenstrauß mit Sommerblumen eingestellt ist, dessen Farbigkeit vor gedämpftem Grau-Blau des Himmels gut zur Geltung kommt. Rechts hinten Ausblick in eine Meereslandschaft bis zum Horizont, im Vordergrund, gleich unterhalb der Vase helle und dunkle Trauben zwischen Pfirsichen, geöffneten Granatäpfeln, rechts daneben Zitrusfrüchte als Gruppe zusammengefasst, in gemildertem Kontrast umso wirkungsvoller davor eine aufgebrochene Melone. Am unteren Bildrand zwei erlegte Vögel, die das grandiose und fulminante Blumen- und Früchtewerk auch zum Jagdstilleben machen. Parrot tulips, roses, an imperial lily, morning glory and other flowers in a sculpted vase with a rabbit, by an upturned capital in a landscape signed and inscribed 'CAREL.DE.VOGELAER ROME' (lower right, on the capital) oil on canvas 53 x 383/4 in. (134.6 x 98.4 cm.) NOTES Born in Maastricht, Carel de Vogelaer is thought to have trained initially in his native city as a flower painter, perhaps under the aegis of his father, Pieter de Vogelaer, who was also an artist. He left for Italy in circa 1668, arriving in Rome possibly as early as 1671, although he is not recorded there for certain until 1675 when initiated into the Bentveughels society of artists. According to Pascoli, he enjoyed immediate success there and was patronised by many of Rome's affluent collectors such as Francesco Montioni, Nicola Maria Pallavicini, the Abbot Paolucci and Giambattista Cesa (see L. Pascoli, Vite dei Pittori,,,, II, Rome, 1736, p. 340). Vogelaer painted several still lifes signed in the same way as the present picture, all of which seem to have been produced in pairs. These include the pictures of the same dimensions in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm; those on a slightly smaller format formerly with Galerie Saint Lucas, Vienna; and a pair formerly at Felbrigg Hall, Norfolk (see D. Bodart, Les Peintres des Pays-Bas M‚ridionaux et de la Principaut‚ de LiŠge … Rome ay XVII SiŠcle, Brussels/Rome, 1970, II, figs. 312-13, 316-17, and 314-15). The present painting was probably also conceived with a pendant which might well have been the picture of exactly the same size, formerly with Galerie Canessa, Rome, 1964 ( op. cit., fig. 311). That picture is similarly signed on a capital placed on the left side; the horizon is set at the same low level and a dove in the left foreground counters the rabbit in the in the present work.
