        • JOHN VOGLER (SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA, 1783-1881) WATCH PAPER PRINT
          Sep. 23, 2023

JOHN VOGLER (SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA, 1783-1881) WATCH PAPER PRINT

          Est: $200 - $300

JOHN VOGLER (SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA, 1783-1881) WATCH PAPER, engraving on thin paper, untrimmed oval sheet, featuring an eagle above "J.VOGLER Silver Smith Carefully Repairs & Sells Watches, Trinkets, &cc, Salem N.C." within a circular lettered border. Housed under glass in an ebonized-wood frame. 1820-1845. 2 1/4" sight, 4" x 3" sheet, 5 7/8" x 4 7/8" OA. Catalogue Note: Consultation with Johanna M. Brown, Curator of Moravian Decorative Arts at Old Salem Museums & Gardens has determined that this is most likely a print made from the original copper plate in the Museum's collection. It is published by George Cutten in his Silversmiths of North Carolina 1696-1860, p. 187, and credited as an "Original photograph from a print owned by Mrs. A. H. Patterson, Chapel Hill." Mrs. Patterson was the wife of John Vogler's great-grandson, Andrew Henry Patterson (1870-1928). The Vogler family was very interested in preserving their Moravian history, and it is likely that Andrew's mother, Mary Elizabeth Fries Patterson (1844-1927), or her mother, Lisetta Maria Vogler Fries (1820-1903), had a number of these prints made and distributed to the grandchildren of John Vogler. No original John Vogler watch papers have been recorded.
