Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1805 Arolsen - 1874 Munich): Study of the Virgin of Orleans With Queen of Heaven Mary handing her the banner of victory, sketched several times, 19th century, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper, mounted on Paper Date: 19th century Description: "It is still dawn and only in the east does a slight glow announce the approaching morning; despite her father's warning, Joan has spent the night under her favourite tree; then heavenly light surrounds her and Mary floats down on a golden cloud and girds her with weapons against the enemies of the oldest throne of Christendom. In silent rapture, Joan kneels before her and adoringly receives the blessing bestowed on her by the Christ Child. What wonderful mildness lies on the face of the saint, with what loving participation she looks at the Virgin who consecrates herself to her service, and on the other hand, how Johanna! how the enthusiasm for the high cause to which she is called radiates from her gaze; and yet we find in the whole position the humility with which she rejected all praise. But through the light robe we also recognise the glorious figure who transformed Lionel's hatred into love and reconciled the most implacable enemy in the English camp, the Duke of Burgundy, to the king through the force of her speech, so that he confessed: O, she can do with me as she wills, My heart is soft wax in her hand", quotation from Erwin Förster's description of Kaulbach-Johanna receiving the weapons. Collector's stamp on reverse: "St. K" (Stefan Kaps, grandson and heir of Erhard Kaps, Leipzig, L.4642). Keywords: Nazarene, Joan of Arc, Joan of Arc, Maid of Orleans, French national heroine, Virgin, Saint, Hundred Years' War, Friedrich Schiller, literary illustrator, Schiller's Maid of Orleans, 19th century, Romanticism, Religious, Germany,

WILHELM VON KAULBACH, ANIMALS FROM REINEKE FUCHS

        Est: €4,000 - €5,000

This drawing is one of the 36 leaves that Wilhelm von Kaulbach created as a template for the illustrations for Goethe's "Reineke Fuchs". The work was published in 1840 by Cotta in Stuttgart. Kaulbach worked for three years on this project and created a total of 36 main illustrations along with numerous smaller vignettes. The drawings, alluding to human weakness and the immorality of the nouveau riche and petty bourgeois, for example, widely mocked society of the time. The book was produced in several editions and was a great financial success. In particular, it furthered the popularity of this work by Goethe, which until then had been considered of lesser importance due to its dependence on an age-old fable.

NÄCHTLICHES FREUDENFEST AUF DEM HEIDELBERGER SCHLOSSHOF Öl auf Leinwand. 73,5 x 99 cm.
