Ward 1878 oil on canvas 36 x 46 1/2 inches ( 91.4 x 118.1 cm ) Provenance: Private Collection, Whittier, California. By descent to the present owner from George Mason, a prominent Chicago industrialist who was also a decorated Civil War Major. Exhibition: Inter-State Industrial Exposition, Chicago in favor of Mr. George Mason, Chicago, dated October 15, 1881 for Painting No. 328. Note: Accompanying this lot is a receipt of purchase, an original book plate from Goupil et Cie, 'Musee pour Tous', 1878 No. 79.; and a letter to Miss Hallowell from the artist dated October 8, 1881 in which, in referring to his painting, the artist believes, " it to be one of the best if not the best picture I have painted."
