  • Roof Board Coffee Table
    Aug. 07, 2017

    Roof Board Coffee Table

    Est: $3,000 - $4,000

This piece is part of a project taking materials salvaged from the renovation of the summer home of President and Jackie Kennedy by this and other Cape Cod artists. Materials from the home are verified as authentic, and have been donated to the JFK Hyannis Museum by the current owners, Ted Jr. and Kiki Kennedy. Artifacts: 1 long board from the roof of the house. Made in the West Barnstable Table Workshop, where word has it the spot that Jackie bumped her head is marked as a remembrance, Richard took one board from the roof, carved out the rot and flattened the wood. The hole, likely used for a vent pipe, makes a place for a bottle of wine or a vase. The table was made to be extremely strong, just like the family.

Artifacts: The base and the centerboard of this table are from the roof walk railing system. The top is from the exterior sheathing boards from JFK’s bedroom wall. The artist has a long and close history with the Kennedy family. Years ago, Jackie came to his shop with a chaise lounge that was rotting, and the two kids were fighting over it. The table shop copied it and made two, for young John and Caroline. Richard, when making this table, found in placing the base for the balusters in its center, space for eleven votive candles. This mirrors the size of the family the President grew up in, with 9 children. It is made to last for many generations, just as their memory has for all of us.
