Westerbaen I or Jan Jansz. Westerbaen II). The work relates to a signed and dated portrait of possibly the same sitter by Westerbaen I in Hardenbroek Castle, Driebergen-Rijsenburg, The Netherlands (see E. Buijsen, Haagse Schilders in de Gouden Eeuw. Het Hoogsteder Lexicon van alle schilders werkzaam in Den Haag 1600–1700, Zwolle 1998, p. 266, no. 4, illustrated).

With a later added label on the back of the panel referring to Baron Braye, England.

    Oil on canvas, relined Follower of Jan Jansz. I Westerbaen (c. 1600-1686) – Dutch portraitist Inscribed 'A' lower right Fragmental copy after another variant of a man’s portrait by Jan Jansz. I Westerbaen, painted by a follower of the artist Exhibition: PortraitArea, Portraiture in Fine Art, Based on Estonian Private Collections, Art Museum of Estonia (Mikkel Museum) 2011; catalogue p. 9 Dimensions: 45.5 x 36 cm Frame: 63.5 x 54 cm Provenance: Private collection, Baltic States The portrait shows an officer, probably Hans-Christoph von Rauchhaupt (1619-1704) Condition: The painting is in good condition, consistent with age and wear. The canvas is relined. Some tiny losses of paint have been retouched. There are further marks and areas of retouching, where the frame has rubbed. The paint surface shows fine craquelure. There are a few faint scratch marks lower right. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered areas of small retouchings, a larger areas has been retouched regarding the face and the ribbon of the sitter’s right plait. The wooden frame shows small marks. Jan Jansz. I Westerbaen (c. 1600-1686) Jan Jansz. I Westerbaen was born in The Hague and trained by Evert Crijnsz. van der Maes. In 1624, he became a member of the Lucas Guild in The Hague. Later, he was also a co-founder of the ‘Confrérie Pictura’ in 1656. His son, Jan Jansz. Westerbaen d. J., also became a painter. WB (in ligature) oil on panel PROVENANCE Van der Does; Thence by descent to Nahuys; Thence by descent to De Jong van Beek en Donk (all the above according to a note in the Iconografisch Bureau, The Hague); Sale, Amsterdam, Sotheby Mak van Waay, 22 April 1980, lot 150; Where bought by the present owner. CATALOGUE NOTE Cornelia was the daughter of Hendrik Reynst, the director of the East-India Company (V.O.C.) and member of the Amsterdam city council. She married Hendrik van der Does, burgomaster of Gorinchem, in 1644. The pendant to this portrait, of her husband, was formerly in the Musée Hyacinthe Rigaud, Perpignan, until recently sold. Their portraits were also painted in 1665 by Pieter Nason (c.1612-1690).
