    • JACOB WEYER (Hamburg, Germany, 1623-1670). "Bucolic scene". Oil on copper.
      Nov. 09, 2022

JACOB WEYER (Hamburg, Germany, 1623-1670). "Bucolic scene". Oil on copper.

      Est: €1,500 - €2,000

JACOB WEYER (Hamburg, Germany, 1623 - 1670). "Bucolic scene". Oil on copper. Size: 28 x 32 cm; 46 x 50,5 cm (frame). Although his biographical information is scarce, it is known that Jacob Weyer was a German painter of the 17th century, born in Hamburg in 1623. With regard to his connection to art, it is thought that he was probably educated in Holland, making copies of Dutch works. His earliest dated works date from 1645 and are the earliest evidence of Weyer's activities as an artist. Three years later he was appointed official artist of Hamburg. Among his artistic output, his speciality became genre battle painting, which was very popular with noble and middle-class collectors. Weyer's artistic qualities are also evident in the field of drawing, which exerted a strong influence on several Hamburg artists. He was a teacher of Johann Philip Lemke, a German painter known for his battle scenes for the kings of Sweden. His paintings were considered by the Swedish art historian Wilhelm Nisser to be "the high point and end point of Swedish realist painting in the 16th century". In short, he was a battle painter influenced by Rembrandt. Weyer died in Hamburg in 1670. His work is to be found in various private collections, as well as in institutions and museums, the most notable being his "Cavalry Attacked by Infantry" in the National Gallery, London.

      Est: €4,000 - €4,500

Weyer, Jacob 1623 - 1670 Hamburg Horsemen in front of scutler's tent. Signed and dated on the lower right on the stone: J. Weyer 164(?). Oil on Oak. 36,6 x 46,5cm. Framed. Provenance: Lower Saxony, private collection. Dorotheum Vienna, Sale 623, 1981, lot 474, plate 23. Expertises: Prof. Dr. Hans Herbst, Vienna 10.12.1978. Timo Trümper, author of a catalogue raisonné on Jacob Weyer, Cologne 04.09.09. In his expertise Mr Trümper states: "The attribution is confirmed by the signature on the stone in the foreground. On the basis of the colouring and the style of the figures the painting can be classified as belonging to the early period of the artist's oeuvre. It is a typical, high-quality work by Jacob Weyer around 1650 and a vivid example of the mutual influences between the Dutch and Hamburg style of painting. This painting will be included in the forthcoming monograph 'Der Hamburger Maler und Zeichner Jacob Weyer (1623-1670)' as an authentic work by the artist."
