Guillermo (Wilhelm Egon) Wiedemann, Kolumbianerin, 1955

      Est: €25,000 - €30,000

Signed and dated in umber 'WIEDEMANN 1955' lower right. Born in Munich, Guillermo Wiedemann studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts there, but from 1936 onwards lived and worked in Berlin. Classified as a “degenerate artist” by the Nazi regime, and thus banned from painting, Wiedemann initially resolved to study photography, but in 1938 felt forced to flee the country. He found a new permanent home in Colombia, where his art was held in very high regard. Wiedemann's oeuvre is clearly influenced by the colors and themes of the tropical world in which he lived. Thus, this portrait of a semi-nude young black Colombian relies on a seemingly exotic range of violets, yellows and rose tones. Characteristic of his oeuvre are the tender contour lines scratched into the paint. RefMod191119

GUILLERMO WIEDEMANN (Munich 1905 - 1969 Key Biscayne) Nocturno. 1947. Oil on board. Signed and dated lower right: Wiedemann 1947. 80 x 60 cm. Provenance: - Studio of the artist. - Erich Arendt, Colombia/Germany, bought directly from the artist. - Private collection Germany, by descent to the present owner. Wilhelm Egon Wiedemann was born in Munich in 1905. After his art was classified as "degenerate" and he became the victim of repressive measures, he fled to Colombia in 1939. His first exhibition in his new homeland took place in 1940 and was met with great success. Over the following decades, he became one of the most important painters in the country. The depictions became increasingly abstract, yet not entirely non-objective. Created in 1947, "Nocturno" shows three standing women, indicated only through a few outlines and plain surfaces. The scene is rather dark and mysterious. The faces are unrecognisable. This painting belonged to the writer Erich Arendt. He likewise had fled from the Nazi regime and in 1941 received a visa for Colombia, where he befriended Wiedemann. As he returned to his homeland in 1950, to the former GDR, the present work came back to Germany. --------------- GUILLERMO WIEDEMANN (München 1905 - 1969 Key Biscayne) Nocturno. 1947. Öl auf Karton. Unten rechts signiert und datiert: Wiedemann 1947. 80 x 60 cm. Provenienz: - Atelier des Künstlers. - Erich Arendt, Kolumbien/Deutschland, direkt vom Künstler erworben.

GUILLERMO WIEDEMANN (Munich 1905 - 1969 Key Biscayne) Untitled. 1940. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower left: W. E. Wiedemann / 1940. Inscribed lower right: MELGAR. 80 x 60 cm. Provenance: Private collection, Germany. Wilhelm Egon Wiedemann was born in Munich in 1905. After his work was deemed degenerate art and he became a victim of sanctions, he fled to Colombia. His first exhibition in his new homeland was held in 1940, which was an immediate success. Over the following decades, he managed to become one of the country’s most significant artists. He was heavily influenced by his tropical surroundings and his depictions became increasingly non-representational. As you can see from our wonderful painting, his abstracts are derived from wild, rainforest landscapes. We see a mother and her child amid an impressive scenery of large, sturdy trees. The inscription in the bottom right probably refers to Melgar, a town just outside Bogotá, which today is a popular recreation area for residents of the big city. --------------- GUILLERMO WIEDEMANN (München 1905 - 1969 Key Biscayne) Ohne Titel. 1940. Öl auf Leinwand. Unten links signiert und datiert: W. E. Wiedemann / 1940. Unten rechts bezeichnet: MELGAR. 80 x 60 cm. Provenienz: Privatsammlung Deutschland.
