Lemuel Maynard Wiles American, 1826-1905 Thanatopsis: original maquette for an illustrated edition of William Culllen Bryant's poem, circa 1865 Oil and pencil on paper, laid to linen 20 sheets, each measuring 9 3/4 x 6 3/4 inches Provenance: Private collection Literature: Geoffrey K. Fleming, Lemuel Maynard Wiles: A Record of His Works,1864-1904, Southold, NY, 2009, pp. 26, 148, n. 41 Geoffrey K. Fleming writes that Wiles "illustrated many different publications..., most notably creating paintings for William Cullen Bryant's (1794-1878) masterpiece, 'Thanatopsis...'" [Geoffrey K. Fleming, Lemuel Maynard Wiles: A Record of His Works, 1864-1904, Southold, NY, 2009, p. 26]. The Letters of William Cullen Bryant: Volume V, 1865-1871, Thomas Voss, ed. [Fordham University Press, 1993, p. 35], includes a letter to Wiles dated July 11, 1865, in which Bryant writes, "I have looked over your illustrations of two of my poems with great pleasure. They seem to me to have great merit and I cheerfully give my consent to their publication with the poems to which they relate. I only hope that they will lose nothing of their beauty in being engraved...The two poems intended to be published in this edition are those entitled Thanatopsis and the Rivulet." Included in the collection of the Southold Historical Society is a letter from Irving Wiles, the son of Lemuel Wiles, dated May 17, 1935, in which he writes, "Concerning the illustrations in oil, for two of Wm. C. Bryant's poems - These paintings, twenty-one in all, were executed by my father, Lemuel M. Wiles, about 1860-70 - Twenty of these were to illustrate Thanatopsis and one as a title page for The Rivulet - Mr. Bryant was greatly pleased with the paintings but his publishers finally decided that the cost of reproducing the paintings would be too great for them to undertake." Line drawings that he subsequently made after these stunning little paintings were apparently employed in a later black and white edition of Thanatopsis. Oil on canvas, 12 x 20 in. (30.5 x 51.0 cm), framed. Condition: Tack hole u.c., minor retouch, craquelure, surface grime. N.B. This painting has been reviewed via digital photographs by Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director, Southold Historical Society and author of Lemuel Maynard Wiles, A Record of His Works, 1864-1904. Dr. Fleming confirmed the work to be by Lemuel Wiles, and the inscription on the reverse to be in the artist's hand. He commented further that while the artist "...did work in New England during the earlier part of his career, particularly in Maine and Rhode Island, I have not come across a Massachusetts scene before. Your work, depicting Mt. Everett in Massachusetts, is not recorded in Lemuel Wiles's personal ledger, which may mean it was gifted rather than sold."
