From the opposite bank of the Danube, the viewers look at the winding river and some birds on the bank. In the middle ground, a wooden barge and two cows in a pasture. In the background, on a slope, the market town of Donaustauf. Above it, on a hill, then the Walhalla, a memorial site housing busts and plaques of important German personalities. Opened in 1842, this memorial was an attempt to counteract the fragmentation of Germany at the beginning of the 19th century by reclaiming a national identity. Tvořil působivé krajinomalby, opírající se o plenérové studie. Náladovost obrazů podporuje práce se světlem. Uvolnění rukopisu v pozdější tvorbě předznamenává impresionismus jeho žáků.
