            The stand with pen rest and three wells for the ink pot, pounce pot and taperstick holder, the handle with shell thumbpiece, on trefid scroll feet, marked beneath each circular well, maker's mark interior base of the pounce pot, the ink pot and taperstick apparently unmarked. 9 oz. Length 5 1/2 inches.

Engraved map, (400 x 533 mm), hand-colored, central cartouche flanked by figures representing the continents with dedication to William, Duke of Gloucester, young men in study at lower corners, all within a decorative view featuring Oxford. Matted. Later edition of Wells' double-hemisphere map of the modern world (platemark 2), first published in 1700 in A New Sett of Maps both of Ancient and Present Geography... This map was meant as a companion to Wells' map of the ancient world published in the same atlas. Wells, a mathematician and geographer taught the young dedicaté the Duke of Gloucester, who died in 1700 at the age of 11 just as the maps were first published. This present map is one of the last in which California is still depicted as an island. Shirley 609.
