            (2) Engravings, Turkey Buzzards/Sea Birds C.1829 Title: See Desciption. Artist: Alexander Wilson Engraver: Lawson and Warnicke Description: Drawn from nature by Alexander Wilson the scene from plate is of the Hawk, the Fish Crow, Ring Plover and Least Snipe. The second picture is of the Turkey Buzzard, Black Vulture and Raven. Date: Circa 1829 Frame: Wood gold gilt, glass Framed Size: 19.75" H x 16.5" L 1" D Work Size: 13.50" H x 10.75" L Weight: 6 lbs Condition: Very good, protected under glass, some very light foxing. Provenance: From the estate of Arthur .J. Connolly History: Alexander Wilson is known as "the father of American ornithology." He earned this title both because of his American Ornithology-the first natural history just on American birds, which was first issued from 1808 to 1814 and so predated Audubon by about two decades-and because he was the first American citizen to become a full-time scientist in this field. Wilson, a Scottish immigrant, drew most of the birds for his ornithology himself; the engraving was mostly by Alexander Lawson and John G. Warnicke. Wilson worked with a small budget and so had to crowd as many specimens as he could onto one plate for the series. This led to the characteristic appearance of many of his prints, with several birds, juxtaposed in different combinations, filling the page right up to the plate mark. Although he fell far short of his goal of depicting every species of bird in North America, Wilson's is a highly respected work in the history of science, and he was the leading competitor and chief precursor of Audubon. These are fine and important prints from the first American ornithology. Meta: engraving, etching, lithograph, hand colored, chromolithograph

Fine content T.L.S. as President, 2pp. 8vo., Washington, Sept. 30, 1914, writing to Senator John Kern of Indiana regarding the reelection of Senator Aaron B. Shively, a Democrat good friend of Wilson. In part: "...I am genuinely surprised that any question should have arisen as to whether I want Senator Shively returned. I do most decidedly wish it. I have admired Senator Schively's steadfast devotion to duty and to the standards of the party and his unfaltering loyalty in all matters of public policy, as all his party associates have, and have learned to have a very warm personal feeling and admiration for him. It would in my judgment be a very great loss to the party and to the Senate if he should not be reelected. I trust that there is no doubt of his reelection. May I not add a word of cordial appreciation of the whole Indiana delegation in Congress? The members of the House have stood by the administration with unfailing generosity and spirit...".
