Although the buildings on the left of this work are highly reminiscent of the Haarlem painter Cornelis Dusart, the inscription "Corn. Dusart fec. 1686" is most probably later. The figures and the feathery appearance of the trees have more in common with the work of the slightly elder genre and landscape painter Gillis de Winter from Leeuwarden. Walter Bernt has already pointed out the similarity to Dusart's later works (cf. Die Niederländischen Maler und Zeichner des 17. Jahrhunderts, München 1980, vol. 3, p. 61). A similar work, also inscribed with Dusart's name and dated 1684 which was sold by Phillip's in London in 1980 has also since been attributed to de Winter by the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie. The same occurred with a further piece attributed to Dusart which was auctioned this January by Sotheby's in New York.
