NOTES Pieter Withoos and his sister Alida were the most accomplished of the four children who were taught by and continued the flower painting tradition of their father Mattias (1621-1703). In addition to the present four studies commissioned by de Malle, Pieter also made studies of fritill…ries in de Malle's garden at Haarlem. Pieter was moreover an accomplished painter of insects. Six of his insect and butterfly studies, all of which were formerly in the collection of the Dutch animal painter Conradijn Cunaeus (1828-1895), were sold in these Rooms, 3 May, 1979, lots 52-57.
