(Antwerp 1581–1641) The Holy Trinity, oil on panel, with the brand of the Antwerp panel maker’s guild on the reverse, 121 x 91 cm, framed Provenance: (probably) Jesuit Church of Saint Peter, Münster, until 1920; Private collection, Augsburg, until 2002 Exhibited: Mettingen, Draiflessen Collection, Credo. Masterpieces of Religious Art, 6 October 2010 – 9 January 2011, cat. no. 119 Literature: A. Dern, U. Härting, Credo. Masterpieces of Religious Art, exhibition catalogue, Mettingen 2010, pp. 262–263, no. 119; G. Finckh, N. Hartje-Grave, Freiheit, Macht, Pracht. Niederländische Kunst im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert, exhibition catalogue, Wuppertal 2009, p. 419, mentioned under no. 69 (as probably original) The present painting is accompanied by a certificate by Hans Vlieghe, dated 6 February 2008. He dates the painting to around 1620 or slightly earlier. The present painting is listed in the RKD database under number 1001088872 (as Artus Wolffort). This balanced and serene composition of the Holy Trinity illustrates the belief that Christ was both human and divine. To the right of the composition Christ forms part of the Heavenly Trinity with God the Father on the left and the dove of the Holy Spirit hovering above. The subject is presented in close composition creating a striking impression on the viewer who is being contemplated by the direct and yet soft gaze of the Deities, and is drawn into the mystery of Christ’s wounds which he gently indicates with his forefinger. Presented as the Man of Sorrows, Christ represents the true epitome of salvation, whilst the representation of the Father, crowned with the papal tiara, symbolises the supremacy of the church. In the globus cruciger, shown in the lower left of the composition, a cross can be observed in the reflection – a hidden reference to the Passion of Christ. It has only been until very recently that the corpus of works by the artist Artus Wolffort has been distinguished from that of his Flemish contemporaries. Scholars have misattributed many of his paintings to Otto van Veen (1566–1629), for whom Wolffort worked as an assistant, and even early Rubens – attesting to the high quality of certain pieces. Born in Antwerp in 1581 the artist had undertaken his training in Dordrecht, where his parents had settled soon after his birth. In circa 1616 Wolffort returned to Antwerp where he soon ran a successful workshop of his own, working primarily for the open market, as well as on commission. Wolffort’s oeuvre mainly consists of religious subjects, incorporating life-size figures with a forceful appearance and considerable plasticity, as is the case in the present painting. Several versions of this composition of varying quality are known, including a version conserved in the collection of the Groeningemuseum, Bruges (inv. no. 0000.GRO0374.I), in which Christ indicates his wounds using his thumb and forefinger. In the present painting Christ’s index finger enters the wound giving the painting a much more emotional and direct impact. In similar treatments of the same subject executed by members of Wolffort’s workshop, and of undoubtedly lesser quality, Christ allows a stream of blood to flow from between his thumb and index finger. Paintings that follow this particular example are conserved in the Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Ghent (inv. no. S-65) and another in the Church of Saint Clemens, Watermaal-Bosvoorde (see RKD database, under no. 1001089286).

Mallorcan school; 18th century. "Flower vases and landscapes". Oil on canvas.

      Est: €3,500 - €4,000

Mallorcan school; 18th century. "Flower vases and landscapes". Oil on canvas. They show cracks and craquelure. Measurements: 80 x 100 cm (x2). In this pair of canvases we see a still life open to landscape on one side, following a composition typical of the full baroque, although the arrangement of the flowers, regular and geometric, remains faithful to the most static and rigorous models of the first half of the 17th century. However, not only the openness to the landscape but also the presence of architectural elements located in the background of each of the compositions indicate that we are dealing with works of an advanced date. The Mallorcan school of still lifes shows a strong influence of the Valencian school, although it had its own personality and must have enjoyed a certain importance, given the number of works that have survived to the present day. It developed mainly from the end of the 17th century and during the 18th century, with the appearance of the figure of Guillermo Mesquida (1625-1747), who raised the level of Mallorcan painting. He was the most famous painter of the Balearic Baroque and the absolute dominator of the artistic panorama between the end of the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century. He was an excellent painter of still lifes, although we do not have a single one of them today that we can attribute to him with absolute certainty. His biographers indicate that he was a pupil in Rome of the Italian Carlos Marata, a painter who had a great influence on the development of still life painting, as he collaborated with numerous specialists in this genre. Mesquida depicted fruit, animals and flowers in his works, and founded a workshop in Mallorca where numerous works were produced, some of which are still preserved today. His style would have been characterised by a great chromatic richness and a clear ostentatiousness and abundance of fruit and floral elements, traits that would be inherited by his followers of the Mallorcan school, as can be seen in this canvas. Thanks to Mesquida's influence, the Mallorcan still-life painters picked up Italian elements, especially Neapolitan and Roman, always combined with the influence of the Valencian school.

M. Jaffé, Exhibitions for the Rubens Year - II, in “The Burlington Magazine”, CXX, marzo 1978, p. 139, fig. H. Vlieghe, Zwischen van Veen und Rubens: Artus Wolffort (1581-1641) , ein vergessener Antwerpen Maler, in “Wallraf-Richartz-Jb.”, XXXIX, 1977, pp. 107-8, pl. 26-8 e note in calce 22-3).

116.5 x 99 ENGLISH *ARTUS WOLFFORT (1581-1641) (circle) circle Apostle Philip. Canvas. Provenance: Brussels, Palais des Beaux Arts, 29.10.1947, ex-coll. Georges Hulin de Loo, as Peter van Mol. Probably a copy after an unknown original belonging to a series of paintings depicting the twelve apostles, made by Wolffort circa 1617 (Hans Vlieghe) or ca. 1622-1625 (Julius Held). Of some apostles several nearly identical versions are known, all of similar size, which indicates that multiple apostle series has been painted, which were made for the free market and could be bought for personal use as devotional object. All of these paintings show the same formula: the portrait of the apostle with his attribute and with his creed and its number inscribed in a stone cartouche. This painting portrays the apostle Philip with fifth creed 'DESCENDIT AD INFERNA TERTIA DIA/ RESURREXIT.AD.MORTIUS' (he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again) and a cross. The present painting was acquired in the sale of the bequest of the Belgian art historian Georges Hulin de Loo in 1947. A series of nine paintings were sold in this sale, all attributed to Peter van Mol (lots 116-124). Over the last decades three of these paintings have been identified and attributed to Wolffort: the apostles Matthew (canvas, 113 x 96,5, London, Sotheby's, 8,7,2004, lot 254), John the Evangelist (canvas, Bruges, Saint Trudo abbey, 113,5 x 98) en James the just (canvas, Bruges, Saint Trudo abbey, 113.5 x 96). 116.5 x 99

Vlieghe was the first to plausibly attribute it to Artus Wolffort, a student of Francken.

“Esther in Ahasuerus' house of the women”, oil on panel, 57 x 81 cm, brandmark of the town of Antwerp and panelmaker's clover stamp to the reverse, framed, (Wo) Several autograph replicas of this composition are known: in the Gemäldegalerie in Kassel, in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Looking for a wife, the Persian King Ahasuerus sent for young girls to be brought to his palace. After they had been attended to and dressed by eunuchs in the house of the women, they were brought before the King. Esther enters the scene on the left, led by the eunuch Efeus. As she is the most beautiful one, it is her the King will chose. As an allusion to his choice, the picture at the upper margin shows the Judgement of Paris. The young Jewess Esther, Ahasuerus' future wife, later was to play a decisive role in saving her people through her bravery. Over the centuries this story from the Old Testament has been dealt with in numerous paintings unter the title Esther and Ahasuerus (Book of Esther).
