German private collection, assembled prior to 2007 Pan Yuliang, original names Chen Xiuqing and Zhang Yuliang, was a native of Yangzhou in Jiangsu province. After her parents had died, she was sold into a brothel by her uncle, where she was rescued by an official, Pan Zhanhua, whose surname she took and who arranged for her to study painting in the Shanghai Fine Arts School under Liu Haisu. From 1921 to 1928 she studied Western Art in Lyon, Paris and Rome. From 1928 to 1935 she taught at the National Central University in Nanjing under Xu Beihong, becoming well known in Shanghai art circles. But her modernist works caused controversy and drew severe Criticism in China during the 1930s. From 1937 she settled permanently in Paris. She taught at the École des Beaux Arts, had exhibits internationally in Europe, the United States and Japan. After her death much of her work was transported to China, collected by the National Art Museum in Peking, the larger part collected by the Anhui Museum in Hefei. Her female acts are mostly self portraits. Paper slightly browned, backed at corners, tiny tear

I know more than ten pieces sold on the opening date. Congratulations! I am taking Chinese medicine every day. It seems to work, so don't worry about me..Yesterday the director of Asian Art Museum from Paris came to invite me to have a solo show at their place at the beginning of next year. I accepted. I already had a bronze sculpture and oil painting of their past director but they asked to include all my work from 1937 to present. So would you have your student pack all my works left at your place and handed to Mr. Ma...Have you seen Mr. Da-Chien lately? He must be recovered well from his eye operation. I had the picture on the wall which had both you and Mr. Da-Chien together. It makes me happy when I look at it every day...Talk to you next time, Pan Chang Yuliang, 6-18-71".

I just received your letter dated 10-14 and thank you for your kind forgiveness...Since 1970 I have been exhibited three times but they were all old works. I have been ill for many years..it's not just the medicines but I cannot hold the brush that has most unfortunately obstructed my painting..I have a hernia problem and in France there is no medicine for a cure, just an operation, but I am too old for that. I decided to rest at home and postpone my solo to 1973 the year after. What a pity!
