      Est: $3,000 - $5,000

(Sant'Angelo in Vado 1529-1566 Rome) The Adoration of the Shepherds. Pen and brown ink and wash with white heightening on 2 sheets of cream laid paper mounted on card stock. Approximately 470x800 mm; 18 1/2x31 1/2 inches (overall). The current work likely relates to a series of at least 10 drawings of the same subject, 2 of which are in Chatsworth and the Uffizi that most closely recall the current work (see Gere, Taddeo Zuccaro, His Development Studied in his Drawings, Chicago, 1969, pp. 68-69, catalogue numbers 19 and 76 respectively). Gere mentions another drawing in the Uffizi which is too damaged to illustrate but, based on his stylistic and compositional analysis, appears similar to the current work as well. In all 3 drawings, plus the current work, one can see the repeated motif of a figure seated on an ox adoring the infant Christ, the reliance of Zuccaro on Parmigianino's figural style and the artist's loose pen and wash technique bordered by bold, clearly drawn contour lines. In the current work, the figure on the ox is in the background directly behind the reclining infant Chirst. Philip Pouncey reattributed the Uffizi drawing (13409 F), which was formerly thought to be by Polidoro da Caravaggio, and dated it to circa 1548-50 (see Gere, Taddeo Zuccari nel Gabinetto delle Satmpe e dei Disegni della Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence, 1992, p. 32, catalogue number 3).

      Taddeo Zuccaro (1529-1566)

      Est: $100,000 - $150,000

A figure walking to the right, wearing a traveller's hat ( recto ); A group of saints and prelates looking to the right ( verso ) red chalk ( recto ); black chalk, pen and brown ink, brown wash ( verso ) 133/8 x 81/4 in. (341 x 211 mm.) NOTES The verso is a study for the left side of the cupola of the apse of Santa Sabina, Rome, datable to 1559-60, C. Acidini Luchinat, Taddeo e Federico Zuccari, Rome, 1988, I, p. 114, fig. 19. The cupola represents Christ on a mountain sitting by a spring, surrounded by apostles and saints. The composition is based on a medieval mosaic which was destroyed during repairs to the cupola and replaced by Taddeo's fresco. The three foreground figures in our drawing appear in the cupola, although they are more widely separated. Some of the background figures are also found in the fresco, but again in different positions. A preliminary study for the entire composition is in a private collection in Paris, C. Acidini Luchinat, op. cit., p. 116, fig. 23. The figure executed in red chalk on the recto was drawn after a model and may be a study for one the apostles who wears an identical hat on the left of the Assumption of the Virgin in the Pucci chapel in the church of Trinit… dei Monti in Rome, which Taddeo was painting at the time of his death, C. Acidini Luchinat, op. cit., p. 271, fig. 15. A figure on the left of the Flagellation in the Mattei Chapel also wears an identical hat and has a similar facial expression. The attribution has kindly been confirmed by James Mundy.
