Item Overview

Description

Achille Perelli (Italian/New Orleans, 1822-1891), "Nature Morte: Red Snapper", watercolor, signed and inscribed "N.O." lower left, sight 28 in. x 17 in., period mat and carved oak wood frame. Provenance: Collection of Judge Ian W. Claiborne, New Roads, LA; descended in the family Note: In mid-19th c. America, still life trompe l'oeil painting was a new style which became popular across the country. "After-the-hunt" images were often the most sought after with nature mortes of wildlife among the first subjects for still life painting in Louisiana. Despite being a skilled and prolific sculptor, Achille Perelli is best known for his highly realistic depictions of game hanging from a nail against a wall. Painted with lifelike intensity and accurate detail, the images of the red snapper and sheepshead fish offered here are vivid examples of his skillful renderings. They are as appealing to the Louisiana sportsman of the present day as they were in the late 19th century.
