Item Overview

Description

Album page signed by 6 U.S. politicians. On one side: Clinton Levi Merriam (1824-1900) US Representative from New York. Charles Randolph Thomas (1827-1891), was an attorney and politician; he was elected as U.S. Congressional Representative from North Carolina during the Reconstruction era. Benjamin Sterling Turner (1825-1894) American businessman and politician who served in the United States House of Representatives representing Alabama's 1st congressional district in the 42nd United States Congress. Turner was born into slavery in Halifax County, North Carolina near the town of Weldon. His parents were slaves. He was taken with his mother to Alabama at age five, as part of the forced migration of the internal slave trade. Turner received no early education. By clandestine study he obtained a fair education. He seems to have remained enslaved until the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863. In Congress he worked to restore political and legal rights to Confederates who had fought against the United States in the American Civil War. SIGNED ON THE OTHER SIDE BY: Ginery Twichell (1811-1883) was president of the Boston and Worcester Railroad in the 1860s, the Republican Representative for Massachusetts for three consecutive terms and the sixth president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. John Edward Seeley (1810-1875) U.S. Representative from New York. Jeremiah Morrow Wilson (1828-1901) U.S. Representative from Indiana. Approx. 5 x 8.5 in. VG
