Provenance

Provenance: Estate of the artist, California. Note: Upon completing his studies at the Yale University School of Fine Arts and Art Students League in 1934, Palmer Schoppe made an extended road trip through the South on his way home to Santa Monica, California. The charms and historic scenic vistas of both Charleston and New Orleans particularly appealed to the young artist. While in New York, Schoppe developed an interest in the jazz music that he found thriving in the Harlem speakeasies, Manhattan nightclubs and New Orleans music clubs. Schoppe wrote, "Jazz as well as art became very important to me." This engaging portrait of "The Trumpet Player" captured the musician as he awaits his turn to perform.
