Notes

Note: The Federal Writers' Project was a part of the Works Progress Administration that was established by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1935. It employed around 6,600 individuals who took on such tasks as compiling local histories, taking oral histories, and writing guides to the then 48 states, known as the American Guide Series. On May 27, 1937, arts workers of the Works Progress Administration staged a one-day strike to protest job cuts.
