Gemstones & Gold Rings

Gemstones and gold have been a natural combination for rings, already popular with ancient civilizations since the beginning of time. At first, both gold and silver were popular metals used to craft rings. Gemstones were usually polished like a cabochon and then set in the ring, but in the 14th century, more advanced cutting techniques were developed and the gemstones could actually be cut into facets.

The diamond is still the supreme gemstone. Together with ruby, emerald and sapphire, it's referred to as a precious gemstone, with all other stones are called semi-precious gemstones. The value of the gemstone is based on its rarity, as well as the Four C’s: Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat weight. The higher a gemstone scores on these Four C’s, the more valuable it is.

Quick Facts

  • Not all gemstones have the same hardness. When buying a ring with a gemstone that you are not familiar with, check the hardness of the stone to see if it suits your lifestyle
  • More common stones like amethyst can have colors that rival more expensive gemstones and can be a great less pricey alternative
  • Gold used for rings with gemstones is usually 14K or 18K, although 9K rings (often originating from the U.K.) and 10K rings (used in the U.S.) are also common and serve as a less expensive alternative
