    • YAMAMOTO BAIITSU (1783 – 1856): LANDSCAPE IN CHINESE STYLE
      Feb. 03, 2018

YAMAMOTO BAIITSU (1783 – 1856): LANDSCAPE IN CHINESE STYLE

      Est: €350 - €700

Painting with ink and colours on paper. Japan, 1st half of 19th cent. This scroll in horizontal format, which was not intended to be hung up as a kakemono but unrolled from hand to hand, offers a sansui landscape in Chinese style with rocks, gnarled pine trees, a lake and huts. Baiitsu deliberately painted this work in a “rugged style” with short, partly pointillist-appearing brush strokes, very much to the effect of the bleak landscape. In the left as well as right upper parts of the painting are blocks of text written in various writing styles, one of them is more comprehensive. On the outer left among other annotations is the signature BAI-ITSU 梅逸 and a red seal. Baiitsu, who intensively studied Chinese painting, was even promoted in rank to a samurai within his principality. Scroll mounting partly with gold hirame, box included. PAINTING SIZE 25 x 159 CM, SCROLL 29,3 x ca. 260 CM From an Austrian collection Condition reports and further images are available upon request - Expertise: Wolfmar Zacken
