Marca tipografica al frontespizio e in fine, capilettera, fregi e illustrazioni xilografiche nel testo, alcune con ombreggiature a penna di mano antica, qualche breve annotazione marginale, difetti e restauri al margine del frontespizio e sulla seconda carta, fioriture e qualche macchia, fori di tarlo al margine bianco delle ultime 6 carte, riparati anticamente sulle ultime 2, legatura del secolo XIX in pergamena rigida, dorso a 5 nervi con impressioni in oro e doppio tassello rosso e verde con qualche abrasione. Al frontespizio antico ex libris "Michaelis Angeli de Titiis (?)". 1 1568

Title within woodcut historiated architectural border, 132 woodcut illustrations and diagrams (8 double-page, many full-page), 6 illustrations with woodcut overslips or extentions, two plates on theaters at end have duplicate revolving plates, 12 11-line woodcut initials, numerous 6-line initials, printer's device printed with the colophon within a scrollwork border, pasted canceled illustrations on E8v and F7r , B3 a cancel, Q2v without the pointer found in some copies. (Minor marginal staining.) 18th-century Italian vellum. Provenance: Count Camillo de Grassis (bookplate); acquired from E.P. Goldschmidt, 1964. FIRST EDITION OF DANIELE BARBARO'S IMPORTANT TRANSLATION AND COMMENTARY WITH ILLUSTRATIONS BY ANDREA PALLADIO. Palladio (1508-1580) is mentioned by Barbaro in the text, stating that he did designs for the more important illustrations and helped to interpret the most difficult technical passages. The other woodcut illustrations are very likely by Giuseppe Porta Salviati (1520-1575) and Giovanni Antonio Rusconi (1520-1579). Barbaro's edition "is widely considered to be the most significant Italian edition of the treatise. The illustrations provided by Andrea Palladio, among others, are the most persuasive architectural illustrations associated with the Vitruvian text" (Millard).
