Francis Barlow, attributed to, Swan, Pheasant, Parrot and other Birds on a Shoreline

        Est: €10,000 - €12,000

We would like to thank Dr Fred Meijer, Amsterdam, for attributing this painting to Francis Barlow. Only a few signed paintings by the English painter are known (for the signed depiction of a dog scaring up ducks see Christie's, London, 18 November 1988, lot 2), which makes reliable attributions difficult. Barlow initially worked as a portraitist before specialising in animal painting. In doing so, he orientated himself on his Dutch contemporaries Hondecoeter and Weenix. His works are characterised by their arrangements of lifelike animals in front of finely painted landscapes. Barlow is thus regarded as the true founder of English hunting painting. This work was later inscribed with the erroneous annotation "1633 P. van Boucle" in the lower centre.

Barlow, (Francis). Birds. Curiously engraved by R. Gaywood. Hrsg. von John Bowles. Gestochener Titel und 7 Kupfertafeln. 20 x 31,5 cm. Geheftet (ohne Einband). London, o.

Barlow 1656. 38.3 x 64.3 cm Provenance: - Collection of J. D. H. Bankes. - European private collection. --------------- BARLOW, FRANCIS (Lincolnshire 1626 - 1704 London) Stillleben mit einer Taube und Spatzen auf einem Tisch. 1656. Öl auf Leinwand. Unten rechts signiert und datiert: F. Barlow 1656. 38,3 x 64,3 cm. Provenienz: - Sammlung J. D. H. Bankes.

(14 x 18.1 cm.) PROVENANCE Anon. sale; Sotheby's, London, 10 August 1997, lot 28. with Spink-Leger, London. ENGRAVED 1671, Multae et Diversae Avium Species, in reverse. NOTES Barlow was born in Lincolnshire and studied portraiture under William Sheppard. He then turned to painting birds and animals and might be compared with the Flemish master Melchior Hondecoeter. His reputation was established by 1656 when John Evelyn referred to him as 'the famous painter of Fowle, Beasts and Birds.' His engraved works include 110 plates for an edition of Aesop's Fables (1666) preserved in the British Museum, and fourteen plates entitled Several Ways of Hawking, Hunting, and Fishing (1671). The present drawing was produced for Multae et Diversae Avium Species, a book which was first published in 1671 and which was so popular that it was still being reissued in 1799. It has not been possible to identify the engraver, but Barlow worked with many of the best engravers in England including Hollar, Griffier and Place.
