Andries Dirksz Both (1611/12-1641) Dutch, Pen and ink, A drawing depicting a bawdy joke, Two peasant characters one carrying a net bag with contents; inscriptions in ancient Flemish in ink above each character, the one on the left reading ''Ribbe de klootenbacker'' (Ribbe the testicles baker) and the other reading ''Self toer maecken...'' (meaning not determined). The man on the right is laughing. Bears inscription below the drawing in a different hand saying 'Original drawing by Jacques Callot 1593 plus 1635 given by Lady Barbara Eyre to Mrs Finegan about 1830, [This is probably refers to the then owner Lady Barbara Eyre who became one of the first six ''Sisters of Mercy'' in the early nineteenth century giving the drawing possibly to a servant or friend (Mrs Finegan) and erroneously ascribing the drawing to Callot] Approx 5 3/4'' x 7 1/2'' Provenance; Sotheby's Old Master & British Drawings, London, 2011, Lot 14

Ellis Dullaart vom RKD in Den Haag bemerkt, dass neben der hier aufgeführten Arbeit zwei weitere Versionen dieser Komposition dokumentiert sind. Eine, die sich heute in der Kunstsammlung der Universität in Göttingen befindet sowie eine weitere Version, die am 7 Juli 1993 in London, im Auktionshaus Sotheby's zum Aufruf kam (Sale London, Sotheby's, 7. Both counts today as among the most important Bamboccianti painters of the Dutch Golden Age. This term is derived from Pieter van Laer's nickname Il Bamboccio, meaning hunch-backed after his indeed hunch-backed appearance, by which he was known in the group of so called Bentvueghels in Rome. The members of the Bentvueghels - Jan Miel, Michelangelo Cerquozzi, Codazzi and others - specialized in painting humorous and often satirical scenes from low life - gypsies, boors and others - and combined this preference for jolly painterly motifs with a similarly jolly and exuberant life style among the taverns of Via Margutta and Via Babuino. The heavy life style caused Andries Both his early death at the age of only 30/31, since he drowned after a drinking-bout in Venice on the 23rd of March 1642. The two lots (633 and 634) probably represent Both's most successful compositions. Originally part of a series of five depicting the five senses, several versions of each of the scenes are known. Of the sense of Smell another version of equal merit is now in the Museum of the University of Uppsala, inv. no. UU 809 and of the sense of Hearing two other versions are recorded: one formerly in the collection of F.C. Butôt, St. Gilgen, sold at Sotheby's Amsterdam, 17 november 1993, lot 44 and the Earl of Bedford, sold Christie's London, 19 January 1951, lot 10. The prototypes were probably drawings, now lost, after which Jan Both also made his series of engravings (Holl. 1-5; see E. De Jongh & G. Luyten, Spiegel van Alledag, 1997, pp. 241, cat.no. 48, withh ills.). As suggested by G. Luyten, op/.cit., p. 245, the series of engravings probably date from before Andries Both departure for Italy. This suggestion would also seem to apply to the series of paintings.

Andries Both (1608-1649) attributed to, A brawl in a tavern (recto), medical treatment of a patient (verso), pen, black and brown ink, brown wash, over traces of black chalk, on laid paper, 29 x 38,8 cm, mounted, framed, (Sch) In these two drawings Andries Both was recording with a lot of humor two scenes of Dutch daily life at the beginning of the 17th century: a tavern brawl on the recto and the medical treatment of a patient on the reverse. The narrative character of the scenes and their humorous and caricatural interpretation are typical for the work of Both and his interest for the banalities of every day life. The happy painter: a painter at his easel with two assistants grinding colours and drawing illegibly inscribed and numbered 'No 63' ( verso ) black chalk on vellum, pen and brown ink framing lines, the corners cut 173 x 150 mm. NOTES This drawing was executed as a pair along with one of The distressed painter now in the Bristish Museum, London, A.M. Hind, Dutch Drawings of the XVII century, London, 1923, III, p. 43, no. 1, pl. XXIII (as P. de Bloot). The British Museum drawing is of exactly the same size and irregular shape as the present drawing. It bears the monogram of Peter de Bloot, but is related to a picture signed by Both, sold at Sotheby's London, 20 April 1994, lot 18. The painting was first engraved by Georg Walch (active in Nuremberg 1630-1655, Le Blanc 12) and again in France by Jean Lepautre and Nicolas Viennot. The picture is traditionally dated 1634 and was purportedly painted while the artist was crossing France to go to Italy. Two drawings by the same hand are in the Louvre, Paris, F. Lugt, Inventaire g‚n‚ral des dessins des Ecoles du Nord, Paris, 1929, nos. 121 and 131.
