              Est: £4,000 - £6,000

WILLIAM BURGES (1827-1881) BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER, 1871 tooled leather, hardstones, enamelled metal, the mounts made by Jes Barkentin, published Oxford University Press, 1871 (19cm x 15cm) Provenance: Lady Mary Vyner and Lady Ripon of Newby Hall, Yorkshire. John Gilbert Getty (1968-2020) with Paul Shutler Note: In 1870 Frederick Vyner (1847-1870) was kidnapped by bandits while travelling in Greece. A large ransom was demanded and, in part, collected before his eventual murder. In his honour his mother Lady Mary Vyner and his sister Lady Ripon used the unspent ransom to commission two churches and this book of common prayer from the architect William Burges whose design for this binding is now held in the collection of the RIBA. The two churches commissioned are The Church of St Mary, Studley Royal and The Church of Christ the Consoler, Skelton-on-Ure, where identical armorial shields are incorporated into the architecture of the external buttresses. A memorial tablet for Frederick Vyner is in York Minster.

              Est: £15,000 - £20,000

WILLIAM BURGES (1827-1881) BOWL, 1870 archaic Chinese gui-form carved jade censor, inset with coloured glass and gemstone cabochons including emerald, garnet, ruby and turquoise, applied gilt metal mounts, inscribed in coloured enamels WIL’ BURGES: ME: F: F: EX: HONORARIIS: PPTER DOSSALE: EDINBURG'NSE: COLLATIS: MDCCCLXX (rim 9.4cm diameter, body 11.1cm diameter, height 8.3cm) Provenance: William Burges, Tower House, London Felix Emile Andrews (1888-1975) Philip Andrews Dreweatts, Newbury, 12 September 2012, lot 34 Daniel Katz Gallery, London Sotheby’s, London, 12 November 2013, lot 235 Harris Lindsay, London, until 2016 John Gilbert Getty (1968-2020) with Paul Shutler On loan to the National Museum of Wales from 1931 to 1953 The abbreviated Latin inscription- WIL’ BURGES: ME: F: F: EX: HONORARIIS: PPTER DOSSALE: EDINBURG'NSE: COLLATIS: MDCCCLXX Translates as - WILLIAM BURGES HAD ME MADE FROM THE FEES EARNED FOR THE EDINBURGH DOSSAL 1870 Note: William Burges's only commission in Edinburgh was for a carved stone reredos or dossal for the high altar (though moved around 1900 to the lady chapel) of St Michael and All Saints Episcopal Church depicting the Annunciation flanked by Moses and Gideon. It was modelled by Thomas Nicholls and coloured and gilt by Charles Campbell of Harland and Fisher. This bowl was commissioned by Burges for his own collection using the funds he received for the work. Exotic antique works of art, such as the present example, mounted with precious metals and coloured enamels are typical illustrations of Burges's enthusiasm for collecting and his antiquarian tastes. Burges commemorated his projects by having archaic items mounted and inscribed in this fashion. Another example of this, now in The Bute Collection, is his Cat Cup of 1867, an elaborately mounted Chinese crystal beaker which Burges had made for himself after his failed competition entry for the Law Courts, eventually won by G.E. Street. It is inscribed around the foot WILLIAM:BURGES:IN:REMEMBRANCE:OF:THE:LAW:COURTS:COMPETITION:AD:MDCCCLXVII.

WILLIAM BURGES (1827-1881): A RARE SILVER AND ENAMELLED PEDESTAL CUP FOR BARKENTIN

              Est: £12,000 - £18,000

WILLIAM BURGES (1827-1881), A RARE SILVER AND ENAMELLED PEDESTAL CUP FOR BARKENTIN, LONDON 1877 The rim engraved 'To H Curzon Esq., in recognition of his services to The Arts Club 1878', the centre of the bowl champlevé enamelled with a mythical creature and HC, the circular pedestal foot champlevé enamelled with mythical creatures 9cm (3 1/2in) high 286g (9.2 oz) Provenance:Henry Curzon Esq. (1939-1891)Purchased by A.Tilbrook from Woolley and Wallis from whom purchased by Robert KimeLiterature:G.A.F. Rogers, The Arts Club and its Members, London, 1920.J. Mordaunt Crook, William Burges and the high Victorian dream, London, revised edition 1981.ed. J. Mordaunt Crook, The Strange genius of William Burges, 'art-architect', 1827-1881: a catalogue to a centenary exhibition organised jointly by the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Cardiff, 1981.Judy Rudoe, Decorative Arts 1850-1950, A Catalogue of the British Museum Collection, 1994This rare silver and enamel pedestal cup is one of five silver 'mazer bowls' designed by William Burges (1827-81) for his friends at The Arts Club. They were made by the silversmith Barkentin & Krall, London, renowned for their richly decorated metalwork that revived 'lost' techniques as well as ornamentation associated with medieval objects and are probably those listed against 8 February 1878 in Burges' Estimate Book for 12 August 1875 to 30 March 1881 (Mordaunt Crook, pp. 316; 412, f/n 25). Detailed drawings of the cups, including the French Gothic enamel motifs that encircle the stems, form part of Burges' album of designs entitled Orfevrerie domestique held in the Royal Institute of British Architects (15-16; RIBA 12863). Another 'mazer bowl' of near-identical design, was made in maple wood with silver and enamelled mounts for Burges himself (now in the British Museum 1981,0603.1). Each cup has an individual enamel boss inside the cup with a monogram together with an engraving around the rim denoting who the cup was made for. The cup offered here was for Henry Curzon (1839-91), an architect with offices in Lincoln Inn Fields, and a member of The Arts Club from 1865-94 (Rogers, p. 68). The other silver cups were for: Alex Rivington, A.C. Bell, B. Frere and R.W. Edis, who were either fellows of the Institute of British Architects or the Society of Arts (op. Cit., p. 412, f/n 25). The silver cup for Alex Rivington sold Sotheby's, New York, 4 June 1998, lot 126, and the one for A.O. Bell sold JS Fine Art, Banbury, 24 October 2015, lot 32 (for £27,500). Some of the enamel decoration was common to both the set of five cups and Burges own cup: the narrow band of black squares is annotated in Burges' design, 'this goes round all the cups'; a butterfly and diaper pattern between each quatrefoil is marked 'this is common to all' (RIBA 12863). An entry in Burges' Estimate Book notes the higher cost of the silver cups to those made of maple wood 'if silver bowls instead of maple £12. 10s.'. Maple cups cost £10. 10s. However, the entry for the silver bowls was later annotated on 1 March 1878: '5 cups complete in silver for £50' (Victoria and Albert Museum, Ms. 86.88.52).

Plans and elevations and detailed drawings for Gayhurst House, Buckinghamshire, a seat of Lord Carrington, c.1858. Twenty-five numbered drawings including a map of the estate, enlarged map of house and grounds, three ground plans, five elevations, and fifteen drawings of details of the old house together with Burges' designs for The New Entrance Doorway, The New Staircase (6) and The New Front (3). One inscribed "Designs made by Burges for the Carringtons about 1870", the majority inscribed "W.Burges/architect/15 Buckingham Street, WC"; with an earlier ground plan of 1842, a drawing of the staircase at Castleacre, and two plans of Burnstan Farm inscribed on the flyleaf: To Walter Carlisle Esq of Gayhurst / from Lord Lincolnshire - Dec 1915. These plans were drawn by Mr. Burges about 1858 when Gayhurst / House, which was practically a ruin, was restored by Lord Lincolnshire's / father Lord Carrington Ld. Lieut of Bucks / at a cost of over £30,000, contained in a large album stamped "Gayhurst" on cover PROVENANCE Commissioned by Robert, 2nd Lord Carrington; Thence by descent to his son Lord Lincolnshire who presented them to William Walter Carlile in 1915, who had inherited Gayhurst from his father James William Carlile in 1909; Later sold with the Gayhurst estate to Lord Hesketh LITERATURE AND REFERENCES J. Mordaunt Crook, William Burges and the High Victorian Dream, 1981, p.144 CATALOGUE NOTE This handsome volume, long thought to have been lost or destroyed (op.cit. J. Mordaunt Crook) contains both the meticulous drawings of Gayhurst made for Burges' first major patron as well as his designs for the changes to the house dating from the later 1850s and early 1860s. The bound drawings of the house attest both the Burges' careful attention to details of building and his craftsmanship; the loose architectural drawings to his growing confidence as a designer of some of the most innovative architecture to be seen in Britain during the third quarter of the nineteenth century. His patron here, Lord Carrington (1796-1868) took in 1856 a repairing lease on the ancient Digby house in north Buckinghamshire, the home of Sir Everard Digby, associate of Guy Fawkes, and Sir Kenelm Digby (see lot 36). During the later 1850s he commissioned Burges to redesign specific parts of the house, firstly new mullions in 1858 and bookcases in 1859 but Burges had in mind a full-scale restoration and remodelling. These drawings are the outcome of his protracted musings. The volume was presented to his patron: a large watercolour of his intended new staircase was placed before the public at the Royal Academy, 1860, no.643. It was Burges' first large scale domestic commission and he clearly wishes to make the most of the opportunity. Whilst, as was often to be the case in this architect's career, it bore partial fruit - The Calibar Staircase (1859-61), The Guard Room (1859), The Great Dining Room (1861), The Peacock Room (1860), The Drawing Room (1861 and 1865), and The Great Kitchens. The style, or rather styles, of the architecture reveal Burges' extraordinary diverse repertoire, fed through his continental tours of the previous decade, but all are held in a sort of harmony by his genius. The Ecclesiologist shrewdly commented that Burges had created 'a sort of free Gothicising renaissance which displays much playful fancy'. This volume of drawings remained at Gayhurst when the property was sold in 1882 to J.W. Carlisle of Ponsbourne Manor, Hertfordshire. In the middle of the last century the estate was acquired by the Hesketh family and the volume came thus to the Library at Easton Neston.
