      • Frederic William Burton (Irish, 1816-1900) An early preliminary study of Helen Faucit as Antigone, c. 1845
        May. 03, 2021

Frederic William Burton (Irish, 1816-1900) An early preliminary study of Helen Faucit as Antigone, c. 1845

        Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Frederic William Burton (Irish, 1816-1900) An early preliminary study of Helen Faucit as Antigone, c. 1845 graphite on paper inscribed (verso) 17 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches. The present lot is very similar to a finished watercolor study by Burton, Helen Faucit (1817-1898), later Lady Martin, as Antigone, c. 1845, included in the National Gallery of Ireland's collection and a finished painting of the same subject, c. 1845, now in the National Galleries of Scotland. In 2018, the National Gallery of Ireland included the finished watercolor in the exhibition catalogue, Frederic William Burton: For the Love of Art. The subject of the present work is Helen Faucit, an actress who came to Dublin in 1845 and was acclaimed for her role as Antigone in a new translation of Sophocles' tragedy. Burton, struck by her beauty and classical profile, made the comparison with figures on a Greek frieze or vase. The drawing is likely a preliminary study for the watercolor. It was Burton's habit to execute numerous studies before making decisions about a final composition. It is probable that the head on the table (a tripod cinerary urn) is that of King Creon, who became responsible for the death of Antigone. The item in her arms is a reference to the wreath that she holds in the finished work. Burton would have researched the story of Antigone to ensure he devised the most appropriate composition. Sir Frederick William Burton RHA (1816-1900) Faust and Marguerite

        Est: €8,000 - €12,000

Sir Frederick William Burton RHA (1816-1900) Faust and Marguerite watercolour h:44.50  w:39.50 cm. Provenance: Christie, Manson and Woods Auction of Sir F.W. Burton's "Drawings, Sketches etc.", 21st June 1901, Cat. No.146; James Adam & Bonhams, 31st May 2006, Lot 93; Private Collection First performed in Paris in 1846, Hector Berlioz's opera The Damnation of Faust was loosely based on a story by Goethe. In turn, Berlioz's opera inspired Faust and Marguerite, a romantic but tragic play written four years later by Michel Carré. The story of Faust inspired other artists of the nineteenth century, among them Delacroix, whose Faust and Mephistopheles is in the Wallace Collection, and Ary Scheffer, whose 1846 painting is in the National Gallery Victoria, Australia. Frederick Leighton (1830-1896), also painted Faust and Marguerite; a work now in the Calderdale civic collection in the UK. Thus, Frederic William Burton's watercolour Faust and Marguerite, dating from the mid 1850's, is very much in keeping with European culture of the times. A moral tale, Carré's play begins with Faust's realising, as old age advances, that he has missed out on life. In desperation he seeks the help of the devil, Méphistophéles, to find youth and love. The devil promises Faust a beautiful young village girl, Marguerite, but in return demands his soul. Eventually, seduced and abandoned, Marguerite loses her mind, and in Carré's play—in contrast to Goethe's story—Faust pays for his perfidious behaviour by going to Hell. Burton produced two paintings that illustrate the story. His watercolour Faust and Marguerite depicts Faust courting Marguerite in a garden, while secretly observed by her neighbour Marthe, and by a mocking Mephistopheles. A second, more highly-finished painting, Faust's First Sight of Marguerite, exhibited by Burton at the Royal Watercolour Society in London in 1857, is set, not in a garden, but in a medieval German city. It was acquired at auction by the National Gallery of Ireland in 2001. Slighter and more impressionist than the work acquired by the National Gallery, Faust and Marguerite appears to have been a preparatory sketch, intended by Burton to form the basis of a more finished work. Details of costume are similar in both paintings, while the pose of the two protagonists in Faust and Marguerite also relates to his great masterpiece Hellelil and Hildebrand, The Meeting on the Turret Stair (1864), a watercolour bequeathed to the National Gallery of Ireland in 1900 by Margaret Stokes. Faust and Marguerite probably remained in the collection of Burton himself, and in June 1901, a year after his death, his studio collection was sold by Christies, in London. Entitled 'Drawings, Sketches, &c of Sir F. W. Burton, LL.D F.S.A. Deceased, late Director of the National Gallery', the sale included Cat. No. 146: Faust and Marguerite, measuring 17 by 15 inches. As Burton's Faust's First Sight of Marguerite is larger, measuring 28 x 24 inches, it is clearly not that work, while the dimensions of the present watercolour, Faust and Marguerite, closely match those in the 1901 Christies catalogue. SIR FREDERIC WILLIAM BURTON R.H.A. (IRISH 1816-1900) The widow of Wöhlm  signed and dated FWBurton / MDCCCLIX upper left; signed, titled and dated on a label on the backboard watercolour 46 x 58.5cm (18 x 23in) Painted in 1859 Provenance: J. Robinson Esq by 1862 Exhibited: London, Old Watercolour Society, 1859 London, International Exhibition, 1862, no. 1211 The present work was greatly praised when it was first exhibited at the Old Watercolour Society in London in 1959. One reviewer commended it as the highlight of the exhibition. He described it glowingly as: ‘The picture of highest intent’ noted Burton’s technical dexterity, and concluded: ‘...there is not another picture of the year which can assert stronger claim to the high dignity of art’ (Blackwood Magazine, December 1959, p. 141). The Times wrote: 'No early master, not Memling or Van Eyck, not Martin Schon, Cranach, or Holbein, ever painted an individual physiognomy more conscientiously than Mr Burton has painted his widow.’ The work’s origin and success stemmed from Burton’s regular travels through Europe, and in particular the time he spent in Germany. Whilst staying in Munich in 1844 he was engaged by Maximilien II, King of Bavaria to restore and make copies of works in the Royal Collections. Burton returned to Munich in 1851, living and working for Maximilien for the next seven years. He produced detailed watercolours inspired by the local people and the surrounding architecture, returning annually to exhibit in London. As well as the present work, German subjects included Peasantry in Franconia waiting for Confession and The Procession in Bamberg Cathedral. * Please note that this lot is subject to import VAT at a rate of 5% on the Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on the Buyer’s Premium.

Sir Frederick William Burton RHA RWS (1816-1900) Act IV, Sc.1 from Byron's 'The Two Foscari' Watercolour, 67 x 82cm (26¼ x 32¼'') Signed and dated 1838 Provenance: Thomas Philip, Earl de Grey, bought from the Royal Hibernian Academy Exhibition, 1838, 45 gns. Exhibited: Dublin, Royal Hibernian Academy, 1838, No.180 Literature: W.G. Strickland, A Dictionary of Irish Artists, vol.1, Shannon, 1969, p.136 The present watercolour depicts a scene from Byron's celebrated work of 1821, which was subsequently produced by Verdi as I Due Forcari. Jacopo Foscari, illegally returning to Venice from exile, awaits the decision of the Council of Ten on his fate. His wife pleads with the old Doge, learning, however, that the Council has decreed exile. The Doge himself is divided between public duty and family loyalty. His father, the Doge, comes to bid him farewell and Jacopo Loredano, an enemy of the Foscari, comes to lead Jacopo before the Council, which condemns him. At carnival time Jacopo is taken to the barge that will carry him to exile. Another confesses to the murder of which Jacopo was accused, but, as his wife tells her father-in-law, the confession is too late, since Jacopo is now dead. The old man is forced by Loredano to resign his power, to be replaced as Doge. In the scene depicted Marina says to the Doge, 'You feel it then at last - you! Where is now the Stoic of the State?' The Doge, throwing himself down by his son's body, replies 'Here!...' The Earl de Grey was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland 1841-1844.

Sir Frederick William Burton RHA RWS (1816-1900) Weary Pencil, watercolour and bodycolour, with gum arabic, 43 x 61cm (17 x 24" ) Signed with initials and dated 'F.W.B/ 1866', signed again and distinctly inscribed 'Weary/Fred. W. Burton/No 2/purchased by me in 1879/W.G'(on the artist's label attached to the frame) Provenance: Agnew's, London Exhibited: London, Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours, 63rd Exhibition, 1867, no. 139. Leeds, Exhibition of Works of Art, 1868. Literature: Illustrated London News, 4 May 1867, p. 447. Athenaeum, no. 2062,4 May 1867, p.595. Christie's Irish Sale, May 17 2001, p 114-115, illustrated. When Weary appeared at OWCS in 1867, Burton had just turned fifty-one. It was eleven years since his election to full membership, and three more would elapse before his resignation with Burne-Jones. Burne-Jones himself was showing four works, including St Theaphilus and the Angel. This important picture, since destroyed, was discussed by Ruskin in a lecture On the Present State of Modern Art which he delivered at the Royal Institution while the exhibition was on. An example of Burton's genre subjects, Weary shows a young Italian girl who has fallen asleep at her spinning. A cat is curled up beside her, emphasising the idea of a noonday rest or siesta. The picture was one of two that Burton exhibited in 1867, the other being entitled Shireen; but this was not, as might be imagined, an Irish subject. "Mr Burton", wrote the art critic on the Illustrated London News, "is represented by a drawing of a sleeping contadina, skilfully foreshortened and glowing with rich yet sober harmony of colour [Weary]; and by a large head of an Oriental beauty, manipulated in a masterly style [Shireen)". Tom Taylor, the art critic on the Times, failed to notice Burton's pictures, but probably not for want of appreciation. At the end of a preliminary piece about watercolour exhibitions in London, published on 29 April, he wrote that he hoped to return to the subject 'in a future article'. This, however, never materialized. On the other hand F.G. Stephens, a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood back in 1848 who had long since abandoned his brushes and now wrote art-criticism for the Athenaeum, was enthusiastic about Burton's work in a review that appeared on 4 May, the same day that saw the publication of the piece in the Illustrated London News. Having discussed Burne-Jones's paintings, Stephens continued: "Another figure-painter with equal aims to those of Mr Jones - inferior power, with colour, and superior skill in modeling and drawing to his - is Mr F.W. Burton. Two contributions - Weary, an Italian girl sleeping on the steps of a porch... in the perfect repose of exhaustion, and the superbly executed and fancied half-length of a beautiful woman in a Persian dress, called Shireen - will more than sustain the reputation of this artist, high as that is". Weary could be based on a sketch that Burton had made in Italy, or it may represent a model posed in the studio. Italians were popular as artists' models in Victorian London, being prized both for the grace of their movements and, when posed in the nude, for their fine physique. This girl, if indeed she is such a model, has evidently been asked to don her national dress. It is conceivable that she is the same, very pretty, Italian girl who posed for Burne-Jones in national costume at about this time. His drawing of her in Birmingham Art Gallery is worth comparing.
