From the opinion of Prof. PhDr. Roman Prahl CSc.: "The painting under consideration is characterized by the characteristic Chittussi painting handwriting in all its parts. The painting is fresh, executed with brushes of different widths and comes from the peak creative phase of Antonín Chittussi, when he made use of his French stay and projected it into his paintings of South Bohemian ponds. The painting is also unique in its height format. The painting was originally called Landscape with Pond and Stack and belonged to the important collection of the pharmacist Biener. Verso labels: Chittussi's estate No. 125 (erroneously), from the collection of Augustin Biener and from the 1925 SVU Mánes exhibition." Dec. 08, 2022

      ANTONÍN CHITTUSSI 1847 - 1891 - STUDY OF A TREE WITH A BROOK

      Est: -

Antonín Chittussi is recognized as a leading Czech landscape painter of the last third of the 19th century, valued mainly for his work from the period after 1878 and during his time in France. During his studies, Antonín Chittussi concentrated on the already recognized Barbizon masters. Their basic characteristic was to describe the landscape with a convincing but free poetic presentation, capture its mood and apply their feelings. The color palette is made with large colored spots of layered paste, applied with a wider brush. This is a very high quality work, high artistic level, where Chittussi's synthesis of the landscape section reached its culminating peak. The work is accompanied by an opinion by Prof. PhDr. Roman Prahl CSc. and expert opinion Mrg. Vlastimil Tetiva. Technique: Oil on canvas on cardboard, Signed: Lower right "Chittussi"

      ANTONÍN CHITTUSSI 1847 - 1891 - A BIRCH GROVE

      Est: -

Antonín Chittussi's impressive painting of a birch grove points to his sensitive approach to the landscape and to the roots of the pleinism of the classics of the Barbizon school. The painter was the grandson of a businessman from Ferrara, Italy, and studied at academies in Prague, Munich, Vienna and Paris. From 1879 he worked in Paris. He focused mainly on open-air landscaping and also successfully participated in the Salon. Already during his life he gained the position of the first Czech modern landscape painter with an international perspective. His first group exhibition took place in Prague in 1885. On the back of the estate stamp with the inventory number of Chittussi's estate. Technique: Oil on cardboard, Signed: Lower right "Chittussi"

    • Antonin Chittussi (1847-1891), Landscape with a Wooden House
      Jun. 11, 2022

Antonin Chittussi (1847-1891), Landscape with a Wooden House

      Est: €8,000 - €10,000

Antonín Chittussi was a 19th-century Czech landscape painter; a pupil of the painters JM Trenkwald and Jan Swerts, successor of Adolf Kosárek and predecessor of Antonín Slavíček. He is considered to be one of the most famous Czech painters of the 19th century. Wrapped in a rosy light, Chittussi here presents us with a wooden farmhouse in the middle of a green valley surrounded by barren mountains. The view is totally realistic and, as in most of his works, it shows a low horizon with the main focus on the sky. This painting stands out above all for its lively and spontaneous brushwork. The artwork is signed lower left

      FRENCH LANDSCAPE

      Est: -

The theme of water in all its forms in the landscape can be seen in many of Antonín Chittussi's works. The faithful rendering of the landscape in the outdoors shows traces of the Barbizon School, offering room for Chittussi’s sensitivity to light and the moods that light in the landscape evokes. Chittussi masterfully works with clouds, tempering the bright sunlight the leaves on the trees nearby, their view partially blocked by a bridge, blow about in the breeze. The surface of the water remains as smooth as glass. In the lower left one can see a rowboat waiting for a ride. Chittussi’s landscape brings not only a skillfully executed visual experience, but also an experience that is emotionally powerful. The grandson of a trader from Ferrara, Italy, Chittussi studied at the academies in Prague, Munich, Vienna and Paris. From 1879 he worked in Paris. On the back of the work, the artist’s address at the time is inscribed on the paperboard: “Paris Rue Blanches nr. 8”. He primarily focused on outdoor landscape painting and he earned acclaim for his work exhibited at the Salon. Already during his lifetime he was considered Bohemia’s leading modern landscape artist with an international perspective. His first collected exhibition was held in Prague in 1885. An expert assessment of the work has been prepared by Professor PhDr. Roman Prahl, CSc.

FOREST LANDSCAPE WITH AVIFAUNA IN WINTER

      Est: -

Forest Landscape with Avifauna in Winter is an exceptional and authentic work by Antonín Chittussi. The advanced painting technique, overall composition and emphasis on a specific mood of the landscape most likely dates this painting to the period following the painter’s arrival in France. As explained in the expert assessment by Prof. PhDr. Roman Prahl, CSc: “... the light and color of twilight is very characteristic for this painter ... | Likewise, the motif of birds flying overhead as well as the winter period appear frequently in his work.” |Antonín Chittussi’s impressive and inimitable painting point to his sensitive approach to the landscape and his roots in the plein air masters of the Barbizon school. Antonín Chittussi (1847-1891) SEASHORE Probably 1879 or 1880 Oil on board, 16x28 cm, signed lower right „Chittussi“. „In a monochrome gray-blue color, the painter sees with a slightly blurred optics the mood of a quiet place under a cloudy sky in a rather humid, dull day. The painting is a typical example of the Paysage intimme type following the Boudin tradition, developed exceptionally and diversely by masters of the Barbizon School.“ Framed. Condition A. With expert opinion by PhDr. Mgr. Michael Zachař. Antonín Chittussi (1847-1891) MOŘSKÉ POBŘEŽÍ Asi 1879 či 1880 Olej na kartonu, 16x28 cm, sign. vpravo dole „Chittussi“. „V monochromním šedomodrém koloritu nahlíží malíř jakousi mírně rozostřenou optikou náladu klidného místa pod podmračným nebem v poněkud zemdlelém vlhkém dni. Posuzovaný obraz patří k typickým pracím typu Paysage intimme navazujícím na boudinovskou tradici rozvinutou neotřele a mnohotvárně mistry Barbizonské školy.“ Rámováno. Stav A. Opatřeno znaleckým posudkem PhDr. Mgr. Michaela Zachaře. Antonín Chittussi - český malíř krajin, vnuk italského kupce Jana Chittussiho, který za napoleonských válek přesídlil do Čech z Ferrary. V letech 1868-1869 studoval na umělecké škole v Mnichově a pak na Akademii ve Vídni. Do Prahy na Akademii se vrátil v r. 1874, ale již v příštím roce školu opustil - poté, co se zapletl do studentských protestů proti německému profesorovi Alfredu Woltmannovi. PASTIVA (STUDY FROM BRITTANY) beginning of the 1880`s Oil on canvas, 22x37 cm, signed lower right „Chittussi“. This painting is "probably a study for a large canvas of the same title from the property of the Chancellor of the President of the Republic. Chittussi depicted in a realistic way a simple cut of a landscape ... Pastiva (Study from Brittany) belongs to realistic landscapes, painted with lightness and elegance and personal passion." The painting was painted soon after Chittussi`s arrival to France in 1879, and is an example of the influence of Barbizon landscape school. Framed. Condition A. With expert opinion by PhDr. Stav A. Opatřeno znaleckým posudkem PhDr. Naděždy Blažíčkové Horové. Pastiva (Studie von Bretagne) gehört zu den Landschaften des realistischen Pleinairismus, wurde mit Leichtigkeit und Eleganz und persönlicher Interesse gemalt.“ Das Bild wurde bald nach Chittussis Ankunft in Frankreich in 1879 gemalt und stellt ein französisches Motiv vor, ein Beispiel des Einflusses, den die Barbison-Landschaftsschule damals auf Chittussi hatte.
