Ottima copia stampata su carta forte e a pieni margini, con le tavole in nitida e fresca tiratura. Cartonato coevo riparato al dorso e alle cerniere.

Grande vignetta raffigurante la lince, 38 tavole incise in rame fuori testo in fine, numerate da I-XXXVIII e raffiguranti piante e pesci (piccolo abile restauro al verso del frontespizio.) Legatura del secolo XX in piena pelle bazzana con titolo in oro al dorso. Esemplare con le tavole in stato fresco di questa seconda e ultima edizione, ampliata rispetto alla prima del 1592 e particolarmente importante per il commento e le annotazioni di Giovanni Antonio Bianchi. Si tratta di uno dei primi erbari con le incisioni in rame che probabilmente incise e disegnate dallo stesso Colonna "are botanically accurate, with separate details of flowers and fruit frequently shown [...]. Small woodcut pilgrim device of the printer Orazio Salviani on title-page, initials, head- and tail-pieces, 37 full-page etchings (26 botanical in part one, 11 botanical and some aquatic in part 2) set within typographichical borders. (Some pale mostly marginal dampstaining.) Contemporary limp vellum (a few small wormtracks on back cover). Provenance: Peck (inscription dated 1807 on flyleaf); acquired from Walter Schatzki, 1964. FIRST EDITION ONE OF THE EARLIEST BOOKS WITH INTAGLIO ILLUSTRATIONS OF PLANTS Colonna, a member of the Italian nobility and a lawyer by training, suffered from epilepsy, and was led to the study of botany after discovering in Dioscorides the sedative properties of valerian, which reputedly cured him. In his <->\KFytobasanos\k<-> or "Plant Touchstone", Colonna set out to improve the descriptions of plants given by Dioscorides and other classical authorities. He is believed to have executed the etchings himself after drawings from actual specimens (the original drawings are preserved in the Biblioteca Nazionale, Naples). Colonna approached the Dioscoridean descriptions with a critical eye, and was in advance of his time in showing details of plant parts decades before their taxonomic importance was recognized. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION in a Staggemeier & Welcher binding. Second edition of parts 1-2, first edition De Purpura. The great success of Fabio Colonna's De Purpura guaranteed the Neapolitan author one of the first places in the Accademia dei Lincei founded in Rome in 1616. The plates 'are executed in pure etching ... Moreover, they are botanically accurate, with separate details of flowers and fruit frequently shown' (Blunt & Stearn pp. 100-101). Colonna identified the herb valerian as the remedy Dioscorides recommended for epilepsy and his first book, Phytobasanos, was published in 1592 (he is believed to have executed the etchings himself after drawings from actual specimens).       Fabio Colonna (1567-1640) Letter with autograph signature by the botanist and naturalist, among the first enrolled in the Accademia dei Lincei of Naples, of which Colonna was councellor and attorney. Colonna's scientific arguments were flanked by considerable knowledge of music, mathematics, astronomy and mechanics, as shown by the correspondence with Galileo Galilei and the publication of his Sambuca Lincea in Naples in 1618. He writes a courtesy letter to Francesco Capolucchi dated Napoli, 18 Aprile 1626. One page, 4to.
