David Alexander Colville Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1920 - d. 2013

(b Toronto, Canada, 1920) Canadian painter. Colville has focused intensely on his local surroundings for most of his long artistic career, feeling that the important elements in life are nearby and in a sense routine. The presentation of the female nude is a recurrent theme for Colville. He has fascinated Canadian and international audiences since his work came to prominence in the 1950s. Between 1938 and 1942 Colville studied at Mount Allison University. He then joined the army and, as a war artist, went to Europe in 1944. By 1951 he had returned to Canada and was teaching studio art and art history at his alma mater in Sackville, New Brunswick and had his first solo exhibition in Canada. By 1953, he was exhibiting successfully in New York. Colville was the Canadian representation at the Venice Biennale in 1966 and in 1967 served as a visiting professor at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He later traveled to Berlin to work for six months in 1971. In 1983 the Art Gallery of Ontario held a retrospective of his work for the first time. The retrospective toured in the Far East, Germany and Japan from 1984 to 1985. Among other exhibitions and accomplishments, Colville designed the Centennial coins, the Governor General’s Medal and served on numerous boards and commissions. I decided that I would like to do twelve little paintings - one for each month. I wanted to continue the medieval tradition of Books of Hours and Labours of the Months... At the beginning of the project I decided upon a geometric system which would govern the forms of each of the twelve works and so give them a kind of unity... The original serigraph, Hotel Maid, was also designed (using the same system and) was executed in the hand-cut film technique and printed on acid free rag board. As usual I did all of this myself in my studio.”Estimate: $6,000–7,000

Dow, The Art of Alex Colville, McGraw-Hill Ryerson Limited, Toronto, 1972, page 87, and page 195, plate 99 for Sunrise, reproduced in colour. Note:Dow writes that for Colville "the highest art, like marriage, required concentrated effort." She continues: "At least one of his works appear to deal with this analogy, though indirectly, by again examining the nature of love. This is his picture, Sunrise, a serigraph which he executed in 1970... The print portrays a woman silhouetted in purplish tones against the glowing rays of a coral sun as she glides mysteriously past a dark embankment in the graceful embrace of a canoe. In a consideration of the nature of art, however, it is the dramatic juxtaposition of the woman with the rising sun which is especially significant. For just as the sun rises uninvited in the sense that it appears without human control, so love, as the reverse of art, happens suddenly and without conscious effort. To Colville, the mystery of love is a sheer gift while, conversely, marriage in itself is an art, that is to say something premeditated and intentionally planned. For him, all art must be the product of a similarly rational activity."

After graduating from Mount Allison University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1942, he enlisted in the army and later served as an official war artist from 1944 to 1946. The experience of war and having witnessed human destruction on such a massive scale affected him profoundly. The few paintings that Colville produced soon after his return to civilian life and his move to Sackville, New Brunswick to teach at Mount Allison, suggest that he was trying to make sense of his war experience as he set about painting his immediate surroundings. Forest and Beach is an early example of Colville's imbuing his subject with questions about human existence. This is more than simply a landscape featuring an uprooted tree and rocks on one of New Brunswick's many beaches. Painted the same year as his canvases for the Canadian War Records, Forest and Beach appears to be a metaphor for the frailty and brevity of human life.

His art is firmly rooted in the North American tradition of realism with the human figure being the most essential element of his work- nature itself being his real model. He paints a world governed by divine purpose in a completely harmonious world. His pictures are constructed on a mathematical system of harmonic proportions. The Raven is a major work showing the power of nature and a golden design of balance- if you draw a line from each letter, they meet in the center of the raven. The medium of silkscreen, the youngest amongst the graphic arts, was first recorded as a legitimate printing process in 1907. The medium had obvious attractions for a precise painter like Colville. He could work in delicate, Pointilist strokes, just as he would do in painting.Estimate: $3,500-4,500

As usual I did all of this myself in my studio."

After two years of army service, he was appointed a Canadian war artist in the spring of 1944, recording the events of World War II. Stationed in England, he trained to work with watercolour, bringing to his subjects the cool and observant eye for which he would become so well known in his Realist paintings. In October of 1944 he was transferred to the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, on its way to Belgium, Holland and Germany. Colville made drawings and watercolours in the field, and this fluid, atmospheric watercolour is from a more peaceful time in his war experience when, as he related, "everyday I would go out with this jeep and driver, and anything I saw that was interesting I would make a drawing or watercolour of it." Once Colville had crossed Holland's Nijmegen Bridge, a more sombre mood dominated, as he and his company entered the zone of the war's destruction. Much of Colville's work as a war artist is in the collection of the Canadian War Museum, making this watercolour rare to the market.

The artist has divided the work into vertical quadrants, and a central circle is marked out into a five-pointed star. The vanishing point of the sidewalk is also clearly drawn. These are the balancing points of the composition, the points that move our eye around in the work. The central part of the work is filled with trees shrouded in darkness, and all of the visual weight of the work is at the right in the steadily advancing man and dog. We see in the diagram that a vertical line runs directly through both of their breastbones. Thus, in their movement towards us, they move as one. The theme of a blind man on a night walk is composed differently in other drawings and in the final 1981 masterwork by Colville. This poignant drawing speaks of the man's visual isolation and the mystery of his experience of his internal night within the night surrounding him.

Colville's Four Women contains references to Moore's style in the formal drapery and robust draughtsmanship of the female forms. The impressive 1952 painting Four Figures on Wharf, in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, was based on a number of smaller works including this fine mixed media work. The scholar David Burnett felt that this image refers to Colville's experience of wartime, and was "an abstraction of memory, a reflection of Colville's desire to return home and be reunited with his wife." Of the hauntingly beautiful figures, which are staged on a wharf in the large work, he states,"We cannot identify specific fears and longings in the women; they are anonymous, even in the characterless drapery they wear. We are turned back from them.....as if we are standing on the shore, literally and figuratively standing back from these events, creating an idealized image of memory." The National Gallery acquired several other important Colville canvases during this decade, including Child and Dog and Woman, Man and Boat.

Here, the blue jay flies by, unseen by the man - Colville himself - who is engrossed in his ritual of shaving. The jay, as well, is oblivious to Colville: both are completely absorbed in the patterns of their species; these kinds of contrasting juxtapositions fascinate Colville. In addition, the jay is spatially outside yet appears positioned close to Colville's head; it is acting in a natural manner while Colville, through the act of grooming, controls his natural appearance, symbolically implying the world of instinct versus the rational. Colville's process is to prepare for prints and paintings with preparatory studies, and the outcome of his explorations of this image was the 1993 serigraph Artist and Blue Jay. This work is particularly intriguing, as he examines the possibilities of both structure and colour for this image in two stages.

Fischer Fine Art, which exhibited this work in 1977, was Alex Colville's dealer in London, England for many years. Great interest was taken in Colville's work by European museums and collectors, reflected in the fact that the painting for this fine study is in the collection of Germany's Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. In the catalogue for the 1977 exhibition that included the painting Laser, the text was also in German. In preparing for his paintings, Colville does a series of studies in which he determines sightlines, compositional elements and colour, and an acrylic work would likely have evolved from earlier pencil drawings. In this vital study which contains all the main elements of the final painting, the figure's face is partially hidden. The main focus is on the balance and tautness of the body in assured control of the boat, in harmony with wind and water. With his careful observations and distillations of pictorial elements Colville shapes his image, transforming the known world into something extraordinary.

Colville produces preparatory works for both his prints and paintings and, in some cases, the decision to execute a print or a painting from the evolving image happens late in this process. Colville's approach to his serigraphs is as technically precise and carefully thought out as for his paintings. This study is at a high point of evolution in that it contains all the primary pictorial elements of the serigraph. His use of colour in this work is more brilliant than the serigraph, making this work less formal, exuding more of the glowing light and the heightened hues of summer. The brilliant blue of the water makes the canoe appear to float, and the pointillist application of paint on its surface adds to the impression of lightness. The uniquely Canadian image of the canoe and paddler has recurred in Colville's work, such as in the 1970 serigraph Sunrise, the 1972 painting Woman Carrying Canoe and the 1979 painting Swimming Dog and Canoe.

While there, he produced many drawings, some of which formed the basis for the 1978 painting Berlin Bus, for which this is a study. Colville was fascinated by the double-decked buses there, and included one in the final painting. A 1971 ink drawing Study for Berlin Bus included figures on the street, but when Colville returned to Canada later in 1971, the idea of the running girl entered into the concept. Seven years later, he returned to this image, continued his studies and finished the painting, which features the running girl, as seen in this refined drawing, as a prominent element. Colville depicts her in a moment of heightened physical activity, sprinting franticly, twisting her head to the left. In the painting, he positions her running parallel but not close to the bus, her stride suspended in mid-air. It is an intriguing image, and as with the most powerful of Colville's works, there is more going on than is immediately apparent.
