  • John Cordrey (British, born circa 1765-1825) - The London to Ipswich Mail Coach, passing a country house and a milestone which reads "
    Mar. 10, 2016

John Cordrey (British, born circa 1765-1825) - The London to Ipswich Mail Coach, passing a country house and a milestone which reads "

    Est: £4,000 - £6,000

John Cordrey (British, born circa 1765-1825) The London to Ipswich Mail Coach, passing a country house and a milestone which reads "Eight miles from London", with the guard with blunderbuss at the back signed and dated lower left "John Cordrey fecit (?) 1800" in the grass oil on canvas h:40 w:59 cm Provenance: By descent within the Ipswich Mail Coach guard's family at Stowmarket, Suffolk, for the past 200 years London coachmaker John Besant designed the coaches; each coach painted black and maroon with scarlet wheels. The insignia of the four chivalric orders - Garter, Bath, Thistle and St. Patrick were painted to the panels with the Royal Coat of Arms on the doors. The coach could carry up to four persons. As well as the coachman, there was a guard who rode at the back of the coach also in uniform and armed with pistols. The milestone 8 miles from London would place this scene in the Ilford/Barking region of London. In the late 18th century and early 19th Century all measurements from London were taken from Aldgate Pump. The most likely bet for the house in the painting is Wanstead House; the old house in Elizabethan times was called Naked Hawe Hall ! It came into the possession of Josiah Child in the 1660s, his son became 1st Earl of Tilney; Child who was later made a Baronet was a merchant who became Director of the East India Company and founded Child's Bank - he once described the laws of England as "a heap of nonsense, compiled by a few ignorant country gentlemen" ! Wanstead House would have been south of the road and roughly 8 miles from London. It was a huge house built for the second Earl of Tilney in 1715, one of the first Palladian houses built in England by Colen Campbell. The house was demolished in 1823/4 due to bankruptcy; the contents were sold first and then the house was sold brick by brick. We are very grateful to Martin Laurie for his assistance with the catalogue entry.
