EDNA EARL CROCKER (1877-1942) Indian Blanket, 1926 Oil on board 23.5in. x 19.25in. Signed lower left Signed, dated, and titled verso The Indian Blanket Flower usually appears in the late spring and signals the beginning of summer in most parts of Texas. With their showy bands of red and yellow blazing across wide swaths of land, they do indeed resemble colorful Indian blankets. Legend has it that the flower was once all yellow and was a favorite of the Aztecs. Young Aztec women would decorate their hair with crowns of the golden flowers. When Cortez came and the land was drenched with the blood of the trusting inhabitants, the much loved flower, in pity, caught the blood of the innocents as they fell.....and to this day the red stains remain on the flower. Signed lower right Signed, dated, and titled verso An excellent example of Edna Earl Crocker's best work, this canvas is rich with thick impasto. The present owner of the painting writes: "Edna Earl Crocker lived across the street from our parent's home on Goodwin Street, Dallas, Texas. We think that the paintings we have may have been given as gifts or purchased by our parents and were exhibited in Dallas prior to 1927. This bluebonnet painting was Papa's favorite and was in his possession as long as he lived (until 1996). It is also my favorite and I acquired it upon his death."
