      MR AND MRS DAVID WELD BY WILLIAM DOYLE (MASSACHUSETTS, 1769-1828). Pastel on paper, signed and dated 1808. Skillfully rendered portraits, the lady in an embroidered cap and her husband wearing a blue coat, 22"h. 19"w., in original gilt frames, 27.25"h. 23"w. Boston born William Doyle established himself as an artist in the area and is known for silhouettes and miniatures as well as pastel portraits. The sitters are identified on the reverse as David Weld (1734-1821) and Sarah Weld (1737-1817), married in 1756. Research located Weld as a life long Roxbury, Suffolk County resident and Sarah's maiden name as Davis.

      THREE SILHOUETTES. Hollow-cut silhouettes with inked embellishments, early 19th century, signed in ink "Doyle", possibly William M.S. Doyle (1769-1828). Two identified on back as Osgood and Lydia True of Brandon, Vermont, and an additional woman with hair comb, in gilt frames, 5"h. 4.25"w. Ex Lewis W. Scranton (Connecticut). According to an accompanying period document, Osgood True (b. July 21, 1771) married Lydia Dow (b. August 21, 1771) in Plainfield, New Hampshire on November 27, 1793, and they had five children. Also accompanying this lot is an additional genealogical information, as well as photographs of True family graves and two modern sketches of the True family homestead by Phil Zea, now director of Historic Deerfield.

Doyle (American, 1769-1828), portrait miniature of young man, signed and dated center left "Doyle 1810", man wearing white cravat and vest and a black jacket, finely executed, reserve on back reveals a lock of white hair; in oval frame, possibly made of rose gold; ss: 2 7/8" h. x 2 1/4" w., overall including pendant loop: 3 1/2" h. x 2 1/2" w. [William Doyle was born in Boston, the son of a British Army officer stationed there. Little is known of his education or formal artistic training. Doyle is considered one of the most important miniaturists of the early 19th century and painted many of the prominent citizens of his time, including President John Adams. Doyle was not just a miniaturist; he also cut silhouettes and created larger scale portraits in pastels and oils. Doyle and his partner Daniel Bowen, a wax modeler, owned the Columbian Museum on Tremont Street where they displayed and sold portraits of virtually every conceivable type.
