Hope Thomas, "Anastasius, or memoirs of a Greek; written at the close of the eighteenth century", Paris, Baundrys foreign library, 1831. Complete in 2 volumes. Including a folding map of the travels of Anastasius. Thomas Hope, was a Dutch and British merchant banker, author, philosopher and art collector, best known for his novel "Anastasius" a work which many experts considered a rival to the writings of Lord Byron. Hopes "Anastasius" novel was first published in 1819 in London, and immediately received the publics enthusiasm, with re-editions and translations of this work appearing the following years. Hopes descriptions revealed the lives of the inhabitants of the Ottoman Empire and provided astonishing glimpses of the wars fought among the Turks, Russians and Wahabees. It also described many previously unknown details of Islamic culture: music, language, cuisine, religion, laws and literature. Marbled paper boards, cloth spine.
