LANDSCHAFT MIT WEIDEVIEH UND REISENDEN Öl auf Leinwand. 61 x 86 cm. Verso auf dem Keilrahmen mit rotem Lacksiegel und altem Sammlungsvermerk. Im vergoldeten Louis XV-Stilrahmen. Eine sanft hügelige baumbestandene Landschaft die ihr Hauptlicht von dem Wiederschein eines rechts liegenden sonnenbeschienenen sandigen Erdfleckes erlangt, wird von Reisenden, sowie einem Hirten mit seinem Weidevieh durchzogen. Besonders der „Sonnenfleck“ ist ein Merkmal, das bei vielen seiner Gemälde so zu finden ist, wie zum Beispiel im Musée Fabre, Montpellier, Inventnr. 865-2-1, das ebenfalls Huysmans zugeschrieben wird. \“Un bosco fitto di alberi maestosi dalle fronde larghe e piene è il protagonista di questo paesaggio riconducibile alla mano del pittore anversese Jan Baptiste Huysmans il cui repertorio è essenzialmente costituito da simili dipinti, che esprimono un intenso sentimento della natura goduta nei suoi valori morfologici e atmosferici. In tal senso i paesaggisti fiamminghi del Seicento (per una esaustiva rassegna di artisti e opere si¶veda cfr. Y. Thiery, Les Peintres Flamands de Paysage au XVII Siecle. Le baroque anversois et l'école burelloise, Bruxelles 1987), di cui Huysmans può considerarsi un epigono, condividono in qualche modo il percorso intrapreso dai colleghi olandesi (un nome per tutti, quello di Jacob van Ruysdael), i quali peraltro interpretano la natura in chiave più decisamente realistica e rinunciano quasi del tutto alla componente umana, laddove i fiamminghi rimangono più ancorati alla loro tradizione narrativa, lasciando spesso nei loro paesaggi un posto a squarci di vita contadina. Lo vediamo in questo stesso dipinto che accoglie in primo piano pastori con i loro armenti nei pressi di una fattoria (la si intravvede, arretrata, in mezzo agli alberi sulla destra): un momento quotidiano calato in una dimensione altrimenti senza tempo. Huy…m(?)’ (barely legible) lower center We thank Ellis Dullaart, Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (RKD), Den Haag, for her scientific assistance Dimensions: 30.5 x 41.2 cm Frame: 41 x 51.5 cm Good condition Provenance: Christie’s March 1961; private collection, Den Haag; private collection, England The picturesque landscape painting shows a group of old oaks in the middleground. Resting ramblers are situated in the foreground and to the left side of the painting the painter opens the sight to the far environment. Conditon: The painting is in overall good condition. The upper part of the panel is completed. In the upper area varnish is little irregular applied. In the lower right corner there is a little loss in the panel. The edges of the panel show partly some marks, where the frame has rubbed. The inspection under UV light reveals areas of retouching in the upper margin and to the right in the area under the frame. The painting is 30.5 x 41.2 cm and the broad wooden frame measures 41 x 51.5 cm. Jan Baptist Huysmans (1654–1716) J. B. Huysmans was born in Antwerp as the son of Hendrick Huysmans and Catharina van der Meyden. He was the brother of Cornelis Huysmans. The painter is known for Italianate landscapes in the style of his brother. Jan Baptist Huysmans died in Antwerp. Cornelis Huymans (1648 – 1727) C. Huysmans was born in Antwerp and a brother of Jan Baptist Huysmans. He was a pupil of Gaspard de Witte in Antwerp and later of Jacques d’Arthois in Brussels. After finishing his studies he worked and lived by turns in Mechelen and his hometown Antwerp. He painted landscapes of his home contry and Italian landscapes in vibrant colors. Jan Baptist Huysmans, 1654 - 1716 , ARKADISCHE IDEALLANDSCHAFT MIT FIGURENSTAFFAGE Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 86 x 120,5 cm. Rechts unten signiert und datiert "1697". Das große Landschaftsbild bietet den Blick von einer Anhöhe auf einen beleuchteten Hohlweg, auf dem mehrere antik gekleidete Frauen mit Blumen und Körben beschäftigt sind, einige am Boden im Gras sitzend. Rechts ziehen Felsen hoch, über denen hochgestellt zwischen Baumwuchs antike Sarkophagbauten zu erkennen sind. Im linken Bildteil zieht die Landschaft zwischen herbstlich verfärbten, verschatteten Bäumen in hellere Zonen mit sonnenbeschienenen, blauen Bergen, überzogen von blauem Himmel mit Quellwolken. Das Gemälde in guter Malqualität und tadelloser Erhaltung. (880907)

A wooded landscape with classical figures on a path and by a stream, a villa beyond oil on canvas 231/4 x 28 in. (59.2 x 71 cm.) PROVENANCE W. Anthony, Duke Street, St. James's, London; (+) Christie's, London, 3 February 1871, lot 45, as 'Huysman' (4 gns. to Herrmann). James Fenton, Norton Hall, Gloucestershire; Christie's, London, 26-28 February 1880, lot 281, as 'Huysman de Maline' (19 gns. to Legge?). NOTES The artist is recorded as a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp in 1676. He was probably the pupil of his brother, Cornelis,who had worked with, and been influenced by, Jacques d'Arthois. The present picture reveals Cornelis' influence on his brother, and indeed the two brothers' ouvres have been confused. Jan Baptist's landcapes tend, like the present work, to have a subtler tonal range and a more expansive composition.
