Inigo Jones examination of Stonehenge 1655

        Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Heading: (Stonehenge) Author: Jones, Inigo Title: The Most Notable Antiquity of Great Britain, vulgarly called Stone-Heng, on Salisbury Plain. Restored by Inigo Jones Esquire, Architect Generall to the King Place Published: London Publisher:Printed by James Flesher for Daniel Pakeman Date Published: 1655 Description: [6], 109 pp. Errata list on verso of 109. Copper engraved portrait frontispiece by Wenceslaus Hollar after van Dycke; 7 double-page engraved plates, some folding; 4 full-page engravings on text leaves (sometimes referred to as plates); title page printed in red and black. (4to) 27x18 cm (10¾x7"), 18th century calf, rebacked with original gilt-tooled spine strip laid on, marbled endpapers. First Edition. Rare first edition of the famous British architect‘s treatise on Stonehenge, the first major study of England‘s greatest ancient monument. Diverging from the widely held belief that Stonehenge was built by the Druids, Jones speculated that the site was of Roman origin and his drawings of the standing stones reflect that sensibility. Lowndes says of the first edition: "According to Gough, ‘There were but a few copies printed, and most them lost in the fire of London.‘" Copies complete with the frontispiece are very rare in commerce. Lowndes 1225; Wing J954.
