    LEVECQ JACOBUS (1634 - 1675). Portrait of men with hat. Provenance: Dutch Private Collection. Exhibition: since 1945 the artwork has been exhibited in many exhibitions as an autograph by Rembrandt. In 1967 she was exhibited at the Natural History Museum in Geneva as an autograph by Rembrandt. In 1979 the artwork was sold at the Weichmann auction (in Wiesbaden, Germany) with the attribution to Jacobus Levecq.     PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN, HALF LENGTH SEATED, HOLDING A WHITE GLOVE IN HIS RIGHT HAND measurements note 80 by 58.2 cm.; 31 1/2 by 22 7/8 in. oil on canvas, in a carved and gilt wood frame PROVENANCE With Pietro Accorsi, Turin. NOTE Levecq is recorded as a pupil of Rembrandt's in 1653 and he became a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Dordrecht two years later. Although active for much of his life in Dordrecht, the city where he was born and died, Levecq also resided in Paris for a long time. This portrait may be compared to Levecq's signed painting in Paris, Jules Porges collection (Witt Library mount), and with his portrait of an unknown sitter in Rotterdam, Boymans-van Beuningen Museum (inv. no. 1472; reproduced in Museum Boymans-van Beuningen Rotterdam. Old Paintings 1400-1900, Rotterdam 1972, p. 69).

    Self-portrait, oil on canvas, 105 x 81 cm, framed, (Wo) The present work was traditionally considered to be by Rembrandt until Prof. Werner Sumowski identified it as "a first-rate self-portrait by Rembrandt's student Jacobus Levecq that shows a new apsect of his art" (see under Certificates). Certificates: A. Martin Wild, 6 March 1927, as autograph work by Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn; Prof. Dr. Vogelsang, Utrecht, 5 May 1930, as autograph work by Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn; G. Gratama, Director of the Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem, 19 April 1930, as autograph work Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn; Cornelis Hofstede de Groot, April 1930, as autograph work by Rembrandt Harmensz. von Rijn (lost); Prof. Dr. Werner Sumowski, 5 April 2004: as an “early work by the rare Jacobus Levecq”. In his attribution, Sumowski refers to an identical model which appeared on the Amsterdam art market in 1999 (see Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandtschüler, 1983, vol. 5, no. 212, repr.).
