(Florence circa 1630–1696) Tulips, roses, carnations, hyacinths, lilies of the valley and other flowers in a vase showing putti riding dolphins; and Tulips, roses, hyacinths and other flowers in a vase showing a satyr playing the flute, oil on canvas, each 52 x 39 cm, framed, a pair (2) Provenance: sale, Artcurial, Paris, 16 June 2020, lot 202 (as Bartolomeo Ligozzi); art market, Germany; sale, Dorotheum, Vienna, 10 November 2020, lot 186 (as Bartolomeo Ligozzi); where acquired by Roy T. Eddleman (1940–2022) In the present paintings flowers, including hyacinths, tulips, anemones, carnations and other species are represented with great attention to botanical detail. The motif of the vase with putti riding dolphins is recurrent in the artist’s oeuvre, such as in the still life with a tortoise, squirrel and an India piglet in the Museo della Natura Morta in Poggio a Caiano. The rendering of the flowers can be compared to those in the paintings Flowers, fruit and a parrot and Flowers in a glass vase datable between 1688 and 1692 and also conserved in the Museo della Natura Morta in Poggio a Caiano (inv. nos. 1774 and 560). A similar dating could be suggested for the present paintings. Bartolomeo Ligozzi was a specialist painter of fruit and flower compositions. He enjoyed a successful career at the court of Grand Duke Cosimo III de’ Medici and among his patrons, Cardinal Carlo de’ Medici commissioned an important series of flower paintings from him. Sale proceeds of this lot will benefit the Eddleman Quantum Institute, a non-profit organisation dedicated to advancing science and technology through quantum research.

As one of the reasons why this material was used, Giorgio Vasari stated that it lent eternal life to paintings that would otherwise have been endangered by fire or woodworm. Artists loved the challenge of incorporating the smooth, dark support into their compositions.
