      Lippincott's Select Novels/The Spell of Ursula. 1894.

      Est: $800 - $1,000

Lippincott's Select Novels/The Spell of Ursula. 1894.Though the tale of Mr. Jervis and Mrs. Rowlands' yarn may have dropped off the literary face of the earth, this unsigned Newell design and its mesmerizing feline remain as enchanting as ever. Born near Rice Corners, Illinois, Newell would relocate to New York City in 1883, enrolling at the Art Students League. By the fall of that year his work was published in New York Graphic and Harper's Bazaar. His specialties were children and animals, especially noteworthy for their gentle humor and visual puns. In addition to creating several popular children's books, such as "Topsys and Turvys" (see PAI-XXXIV, 2) and "The Slant Book," Newell also did one newspaper comic, which appeared in 1905 and 1906. It was called "The Naps of Polly Sleepyhead," featuring a young girl and her nightmarish naps. PETER SHEAF HERSEY NEWELL (1862-1924)
