North Pacific Ocean. Capt. Hand Color. This scarce and interesting map of Alaska and the Bering Strait details the explorations of Captain John Meares. As noted in the title, the map shows the region explored by Captain Cook, but the primary focus is on the tracks of Meares' voyage in 1788-89, ten years after Cook's expedition. Meares is one of the more colorful figures in the early European exploration of the Northwest coast and Alaska. He claimed many of the discoveries of others as his own and rekindled the idea of the Sea of the West and a Northwest Passage. His mythical inland sea, Archipel du Nord, appears stretching from the Strait of Juan de Fuca northwards to just north of the Queen Charlotte Islands, although it is not completely delineated. A note indicates that the American sloop Lady Washington, captained by Robert Gray, had explored this sea in 1789. This was a complete fabrication on the part of Meares; nevertheless it gave new credence to the idea and appears on several later maps as well.

Robert Morris (1732 - 1806) was one of the most fascinating people of his time. Morris was delegate of the first Continental Congress in 1774, where the American Colonies arranged the resistance movement against the English Crown. Furthermore he was war financier, signer of the declaration of independence, delegate of the constitutional convention of 1787 and member of the senate. Morris was interested in the financial sector. He raised the money to support the troops of George Washington. The money helped Washington to afield his troops under difficult circumstances. Robert Morris was American Minister of Finance between 1781 and 1784. He founded the Bank of North America and the Bank of New York, at that time. Robert Morris (1732 - 1806) war eine der schillerndsten Personen seiner Zeit. NORTH AMERICAN LAND CO.

        Est: €400 - €800

16 March 1795 PENNSYLVANIA. PHILADELPHIA. Cert. of 4 Founder Shares. black. No 565. A fine example of this popular piece, signed by Robert Morris, as president. Morris (1734-1806) was born in England, gained his first serious commercial experience in shipping, and, for 39 years, was head of Willing, Morris & Co. Morris may be considered as the financier of the American revolution. It was Morris who found money when Washington's troops were in serious difficulty on the battlefield. He was one of the signers of the declaration of Independence. In 1787 he was a delegate to theconstitutional assembly in Philadelphia. In 1782 he founded the first bank of the young nation, the Bank of North America. From 1789-95 he was a U.S. Senator for PA. On Feb. 20, 1795, Morris founded together with Greenleaf and Nicholson the North American Land Company (NALC) to finance their land speculation business. It was the largest land trust ever known in America, more than 6,000,000 acres (24,000 km²), most of it valued at about 50 cents an acre. NALC was authorized to issue 30,000 shares of $100 each. The 3 partners guaranteed a 6% annual dividend. An expected loan from Holland never materialized because England and the Dutch declared war on Revolutionary France. The subsequent Napoleonic Wars ruined the market for American lands, and Morris's highly leveraged company collapsed.

North American Land Company certificate #1926

        Est: $600 - $1,200

Number 1926 to Bird, Savage, and Bird in 1795. Signed by Robert Morris (later cancelled for obvious reasons) and James Marshall. Robert Morris was called the Òfinancier of the American Revolution.Ó But his involvement with the North American Land Company lieterally destroyed his life. During the Revolutionary War Morris, an extremely wealthy Philadelphian, kept his friend George Washington and his troops fed, clothed, and armed. After the war Morris tried his hands in other ventures including the largest land trust in American History, and is one of the first publicly traded Real Estate companies. To make a long story short, his investments turned bad and the harder he tried to reverse his fortunes the deeper in debt he became. So in 1798 the financier of the American Revolution and signer of the Declaration of Independence found himself in debtors prison! James Marshall (brother of Chief Justice John Marshall) was his son-in-law and made a valiant but unsuccessful trip to Europe to gain supporters. Bird, Savage & Bird was a London Financial Firm and certianly one fo the places James Marshall would have visited. (Prag collection) City: Philadelphia State: Pennsylvania Date: HWAC#: 33052

Map of an Expedition to the Rocky Mountains in the Year 1842 and to Oregon and North California in the Year 1843-44. Baltimore: E. Weber & Co. [1845]. Large folding map (825 x 1346 mm). FIRST EDITION, the Senate issue. AN OUTSTANDING ASSOCIATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY SAM HOUSTON on the front free endpaper: “Presented to Miss E. D. Burnside, by her friend and obt. Servt Sam Houston, Texas. Washington, 19 June [1846].” A powerful association of “Pathfinder” Frémont’s with a central figure in Texas history. Frémont’s Report describes the 10,000-mile “wilderness which lies between the frontiers of the Missouri to the shores of the Pacific” (Wheat). Houston was back in Washington as Senator for the new State of Texas, 14-years after being forced to flee the U.S. after his caning of Congressman William Stanbery. The two reports, written with the help of Frémont's wife Jessie Benton, "caught the public imagination: images of Frémont's guide, the then little-known Christopher 'Kit' Carson, riding bareback across the prairie, and Frémont himself, raising a flag on a Rocky Mountain peak, entered the national mythology" (Pamela Herr, American National Biography). The reports mapped out all California rivers south of the American River and the three Colorado rivers. They became essential guides for gold rush travelers and settlers heading for California and the Oregon Territory. Frémont stresses the importance of Preuss's large map of the routes traversed in both expeditions: "it fills up the vast geographical chasm" between Missouri and the Columbia River. Historians ever since have warmly agreed, calling it "monumental in its breadth--a classic of exploring literature" (Goetzmann, Exploration and Empire, p.248). Wheat, in Mapping the Transmississippi West, deems it "as important a step forward from the earlier western maps...as...Pike, Long, and Lewis and Clark in their day" (p.495). John James Audubon (1785 - 1851). New York: V.G. Audubon, 1851-1854. 3 volumes. (10 x inches). 155 fine handcolored lithographed and chromolithographed plates by W. E. Hitchcock and R. Trembly after J.J. and J. W. Audubon (pale waterstain affecting a few text leaves which are also a bit brown). Cotnemporary full red morocco, gilt (a bit scuffed and darkened at the edges of the covers). First octavo edition, later issue title-page in volume one, but clearly bound from the original parts. The ?Quadrupeds? was first published in three Imperial folio volumes between 1845 and 1848, as ?The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America?, with 150 colour plates. The first octavo edition, issued in response to the success of a similar edition of ?The Birds of America?, between 1851 and 1854, contains all of the original 150 plates, reduced by means of the camera lucida, with 5 of the 6 supplemental octavo plates that were issued separately with text in 1854. Audubon?s enthusiasm at the start of the project was unbridled. Around 1840 he wrote to his collaborator, the Rev. James Bachman, ?I am growing old, but what of this? My spirits are as enthusiastical as ever, my legs full able to carry my body for ten years to come, and in about two of these I expect the illustrations out, and ere the following twelve months have elapsed, their histories studied, their descriptions carefully prepared and the book printed! Only think of the quadrupeds of America being presented to the World of Science by Audubon and Bachman? (Streshinsky, Audubon, p. 331). The artist managed to complete seventy-seven drawings before failing health kept him from his work. The remainder were completed by John Woodhouse Audubon. The dauntingly massive enterprise was a commercial success, owing chiefly to Victor?s careful management. Before Audubon?s death in 1851, his sons succeeded in soliciting some three hundred subscriptions for the work. Bennett 5; Nissen ZBI 163; Sabin 2638.

Contemporary English mottled calf gilt, red morocco lettering-piece on spine (rebacked preserving original spine, some light wear at extremities, bookplate removed from pastedown). FIRST EDITION. A TALL COPY OF HEARNE'S WORK ON THE EXPLORATION OF THE COPPERMINE RIVER. Hearne was the first white man to cross North America north of Mexico, and the first to travel overland to the Arctic Ocean. He'd been sent by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1769 to find a northwest passage via Hudson Bay and to explore the country for copper mines which had been reported by the Indians. After two initial failures, he reached the Coppermine River in December of 1770 and followed it to its mouth on the Arctic coast. On his return he discovered Great Slave Lake. As a result of Hearne's explorations, any theory of a western exit to the Pacific was disproved, and much was learned about the natural history and Indian tribes of the region. The navigator Jean François La Pérouse, who captured Fort Albany on Hudson Bay, discovered Hearne's manuscript and negotiated with the Hudson's Bay Company for its publication. "Nothing can be more vivid than his descriptions of their savage customs, their brutal indifference to their own as well as others' sufferings, and their horrible massacres of rival tribes" (Field). Hearne's narrative is particularly noteworthy for its candid and graphic descriptions: "When I was on my passage from Cumberland House to York Fort, two boys killed a fine buck moose in the water, by forcing a stick up its fundament; for they had neither gun, bow, nor arrows with them." Peter C. Newman writes in Empire of the Bay (2000): "That painfully honest chronicle of his epic journey -- published twenty-three years later as A Journey from Hudson's Bay to the Northern Ocean [sic] -- turned out to be as important a legacy as the journey itself. The perceptiveness that allowed Hearne to view each new experience without the inhibitions of his time made his diary a classic in the literature of northern discovery" (p.232).
