WILLI NOWAK 1886 - 1977 - THE SETTER

The subject of a setter with a charming, swirling light colouring is a fine example of the artist's painting art. It is characterized by a typically deft brushwork, sovereign handling of the paint patch and pasty texture. A German-born painter, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under F. Thiele, and was a professor there from 1929. As a member of the Osma group he exhibited at both of their exhibitions 1907-1908. His starting point was Expressionism, and he also brought contacts with its German line into the Czech environment. He is characterized by sensualist relaxed painting, from the 1920s onwards he toned down his colour and luminosity under the influence of French classicism and neo-classicism. From the 1940s onwards, colour and colour patches in conjunction with light reasserted themselves. There is a study on paper on the painting preserved in the Gallery of Modern Art in Roudnice nad Labem, inv. no.: O0377. Technique: oil on canvas, Signed: sign. lower right: Nowak

The painter, lithographer and university teacher Willi Nowak was born 1886 in Mníek in the Czech Republic. He completed art studies in Prague, Munich and the Netherlands and worked as a lithographer and painter, who was especially known for his figure, portrait and landscape paintings. In addition, he was professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and a founding member of the Prague Secession. In 1907 he joined the well-known Expressionist artist group The Eight, which was inspired by the expressivity of Edvard Munch. Der Maler, Lithograph und Hochschullehrer Willi Nowak wurde 1886 im tschechischen Mníek geboren. Er absolvierte ein Kunststudium in Prag, München und den Niederlanden und arbeitete daraufhin als Lithograph und Maler, der vor allem für seine Figuren-, Portrait- und Landschaftsbilder bekannt war. Zudem unterrichtete er als Professor an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Prag und war Gründungsmitglied der Prager Secession. Im Jahr 1907 schloss er sich der bekannten, expressionistischen Künstlervereinigung die Acht an, welche von der Expressivität Edvard Munchs inspiriert war. RefSch5320 RefPai5320

Oil on canvas. Signed lower left: Willi Nowak. This bouquet featuring attractive, harmoniously balanced colors is an excellent example of Nowak's painterly talent and expression. It is distinctive for its typical agile brushwork, mastery of the color patch and impasto structure. A German Bohemian, Nowak studied under Franz Thiele at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and became a professor at the academy in 1929. As a member of the Osma art group, he exhibited at both of their exhibitions in 1907–1908. Nowak was an Expressionist who helped to mediate contacts between Czech and German Expressionists. He is characterized by his sensual, relaxed painting style; in the 1920s, under the influence of French Neoclassicism, he toned down the color and light in his paintings. From the 1940s he again advocated color and the color patch connected with light.

NOWAK Vilem (Willi) (3. 10. 1886 Mnisek near Dobris - 20. 10. 1977 Prague) Portrait of a young woman Lithograph printed in colours, 340 x 275 mm, mounted, glazed, undated [mid-1920s], signed lower right, ex coll. Rudolf Rysavy. Czech painter of German origin, he studied under F. Thiele at the Prague Academy of Arts, where he was appointed professor in 1929. He joined the Osma group of artists and took part in both exhibitions of the group in 1907 and 1908.
