SERGIUS PAUSER* (Vienna 1896 - 1970 Klosterneuburg) Self portrait with mask, around 1926 oil/canvas, 60 x 73 cm signed Sergius Pauser exhibited in Belvedere, Vienna 1996 and Das Malschiff, Künstlerhaus 2007 depicted in Magic Realism: Art in Weimar Germany 1919 - 1913, Tate Modern, London 2019, p. 81 provenance: Private property, USA, Kunsthandel Schütz, Vienna 2008, private collection ESTIMATE °€ 20.000 - 30.000 STARTING PRICE °€ 20.000 Sergius Pauser was an Austrian painter of landscapes, still lifes and portraits. He studied in Munich from 1919 to 1924 and at the Vienna Academy under Karl Sterrer from 1925 to 1926. During this time he was particularly impressed by the artistic work of Max Beckmann, Otto Dix and Karl Hofer. In 1925 he returned to Vienna, studied at the Academy of Art for another three months, and in 1927 became a member of the Vienna Secession. In 1932 he received the Austrian State Prize. Study trips took him to Italy, France and Switzerland in 1938, where he was strengthened in his realistic-expressive painting style. Initially oriented to Expressionism, he turned to the strict style of the New Objectivity from the later 1920s, later he again used a more relaxed style of painting. In a letter addressed to Rudolf Hermann Eisenmenger (1940), Pauser reports an incident during an exhibition at the "Haus der deutschen Kunst" in Munich, where Hitler, enraged, had taken down paintings by Pauser. However, in 1939 Pauser was again represented at the Great German Art Exhibition with a panel painting that corresponded to the artistic taste of the Nazis ("Frau Hilda Trenker"). In 1943 Pauser took over the direction of the master school for portrait painting at the Academy. Asked back to Vienna in 1945 by the city councilor for cultural and popular education Viktor Matejka, he was appointed professor in 1947. In the post-war period he was a portrait painter in demand. He made the portraits of many politicians and actors and received awards and honors. A scandal occurred in 1955 when Pauser was commissioned by the Austrian government to paint the signing of the Austrian State Treaty at Belvedere Palace. The first painting was rejected and purchased by the Federal Ministry for Education and the Arts. Sergius Pauser created a second and third version of his oil sketch made on the spot. The rather impressionistic work was rejected by Federal Chancellor Julius Raab. The commission for a painting of the State Treaty was given to Robert Fuchs. Pauser's work was shown in a major retrospective at the Österreichische Galerie in 1996. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked °), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax of 13%, for photographys 20%, is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.

Sergius Pauser (Austria, 1896 - 1970) A Viennese Painter Austrian art from Expressionism to Modernism is characterised by such prominent personalities as Egon Schiele (1890-1918), Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980), Herbert Boeckl (1894-1966) and Max Weiler (*1910), as well as by the artists of the Galerie nachst St. Stephan, the Vienna Art Club and the Viennese action painters. These artists, whose main period of activity lay between 1910 and 1950 and whose works can chiefly be attributed to Neo-Realism, have received little recognition. Universally speaking, this era counts for very little, most of its protagonists being somewhat removed from the mainstream of art. In the meantime, however, more interest is being shown in their works, both within Austria and elsewhere, for such individual movements clearly form an integral part of a nation?s artistic development as a whole. Furthermore, these artists are well able to hold their own at an international level. Sergius Pauser was born on 28 December 1896 in Vienna as the son of a dentist. Around 1913, as a teenager, he went through a serious mental crisis. He was silent for a year and had suicidal intentions. During a therapeutic trip to Rome he produced his first watercolors. After high school he volunteered for the military service which led him to the Carpathian Mountains in 1917 and resulted in a severe tuberculosis disease. Sergius Pauser studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1919 to 1924 where he was especially influenced by the artistic work of Max Beckmann and Otto Dix, and from 1925 to 1926 at the Vienna Academy of Art under Karl Sterrer. He became a member of the Secession in 1927 and regularly took part in Secession exhibitions. Both, the critics as well as the Austrian society, gave him credit for his portraits. In 1932 he was awarded the Austrian state prize. His student and patron, the leather manufacturer Fritz Sinaiberger, enabled him study trips to Italy, France and Switzerland, where he was confirmed in his realistic-expressive style of painting. In 1934 and 1936 he was represented at the Biennale in Venice. Exhibitions in Germany, Switzerland and the USA as well as numerous awards (including the great gold medal of honour of the city of Budapest) made ??him internationally known. In 1943 Pauser took over the supervision of the master school of painting at the Academy and in 1947 he was appointed professor. He taught there until 1966. After the war he was much in demand as a portraitist and firmly integrated in the Austrian art scene. He made portraits of many politicians and actors and received numerous awards and honors. His work was shown in a major retrospective at the Osterreichische Galerie Belvedere in 1996 and is located in numerous important collections today. Sergius Pauser died on 16 March 1970 at the age of 74 in Klosterneuburg.

He first began to study architecture and then changed to the fine arts, studying from 1919 to 1924 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. During this time he was influenced primarily by the artistic work of Max Beckmann, Otto Dix and Karl Hofer. In 1925 he returned to Vienna and further studied for a year at the local Academy of Arts. In 1927 he was also a member of the Vienna Secession. Pauser’s artistic work went through several transformations during his career. His early work was based initially on Expressionism and turned in the late 1920s to the style of New Objectivity in order to approach a loosened painting style again especially after 1945. Sergius Pauser(Vienna 1896-1970 Klosterneuburg) "Bouquet of flowers in a yellow jug", c. 1955, signed Sergius Pauser, oil on canvas, 73 x 60 cm, framed, (K)With a stamped label on the reverse: Prof. Sergius Pauser, Wien I, Schillerplatz No. 3; hand-written inscription: "Blumen in gelbem Krug", Öl unverkäuflich [not for sale].Provenance: private property, ViennaRupert Feuchtmüller, Sergius Pauser, mit einem Werkkatalog von Angela Pauser, Edition Tusch, Vienna 1977, p. 193, No. 551Colour builds and acts, the broad brushstrokes dictates what happens, the colours create an object anew. In 1936, Pauser wrote in his article in the Neue Freie Presse, already quoted above (1 November 1936): "...the colour...a value...that is determined by the degree of delight it gives to those susceptible to it... Those who have developed a sense of it will enjoy the harmony produced by the combination of colours of which a form has deliberately been built, and delights of that sort can be so strong that they will drown all other desires. In order create a satisfactory picture along these new lines, one is forced to make great sacrifices and experience repeated assaults and impotent defeats; one must wilfully renounce things one's skilfulness tempts one to do. The traces of such a fight allow the expert spectator to follow the evolution of a work." If one follows this exciting path that seems to be so modest when looked at from the outside, one cannot help but investigate Pauser's virtuoso technique, which he masters so perfectly that it never became an end in itself. Rupert Feuchtmüller (in der oben angeführten Literatur)
