      DESCRIPTION: Albert L. Rawson (American, 1828-1903). Watercolor on paper. Signed and dated 1896 in lower right corner. In wooden frame with cloth matting. Rawson, author, engraver, student of law, theology and art, and extensive traveler. He illustrated books including "The Life of Jesus" by Henry Ward Beecher (1871). He executed more than 3000 engravings and painted the portraits of Queen Victoria, Louis Napoleon, Empress Eugenie, and other celebrities. MEASUREMENTS: 13-7/8" x 9-7/8". Overall in frame 18-1/2" x 15-1/2". CONDITION: Minimal wear to surface. Minimal loss to frame.

      ALBERT LEIGHTON RAWSON (AMERICAN 1829-1902). VILLAGE CROSSROADS, MYERSTOWN, VIRGINIA, CIRCA 1864. Oil on canvas, 16 x 20 inches. Signed "A.L. Rawson" on box l.r. Inscribed on the larger box "Myerstown, VA" and "Cap. Blazer/ Lt. Cole."The inscriptions refer to a Civil War skirmish at Myerstown in 1864 between Union cavalry under Capt. R. Blazer and Confederate cavalry under Major Richards. The Confederates, armed with revolvers, ambushed and routed the Union soldiers. The figure in a suit may be a self-portrait of the artist, who worked as an illustrator and engraver, taking notes on the battle.

      A NEW ENGLAND LANDSCAPE Contemporary signature mounted on back of frame, watercolor on paper, framed. 8 x 12 1/2 in. sight. PROVENANCE: Albert Leighton Rawson was born at Chester, Vermont. He traveled extensively throughout the United States, Central American, and Middle and Far East. An author, Rawson published books on the history of world religions, Central American Mound Builders, European and Middle Eastern languages, archeology, and antiquities. He also provided illustrations and maps to magazines and to the books of other authors. A founder of the Theosophical Society in the United States, Rawson was a member of numerous literary, geographical and scientic societies. He died in New York City.
