The Temple of Vesta in Tivoli

      Est: €1,000 - €1,500

REHN, JEAN ERIC Stockholm 1717 - 1793 Title: The Temple of Vesta in Tivoli. Technique: Watercolour pen drawing on paper. Mounting: Mounted. Measurement: 30,5 x 45cm. Notation: Signed and dated lower right: I.E. Rehn 1763. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. Jean Eric Rehn was a Swedish architect, decorator and engraver who received his training as an etcher in Paris in the early 1740s. After his return to Sweden, Rehn worked for the royal silk, wool and linen factories and made drawings and graphic designs for jewellers, cabinet makers, porcelain, etc. Afterwards he taught at the Swedish Academy of Arts as an engraving teacher. Supported by Queen Luise Ulrike, the artist undertook a study trip to France and Italy in 1755-1756, during which he lived in Rome for six months. This sheet, which depicts the so-called Temple of Vesta or Round Temple of Tivoli, can be dated to this period. In the 18th century, the Temple of Vesta was considered one of the obligatory destinations on the grand tours that artists and aristocrats were to visit; for this reason, among others, it was immortalised several times in drawings, paintings and engravings. After Rehn returned from Italy, he was commissioned to work for the court as an architect, illustrator and designer.

Paris, Musée Carnavalet 1947, nr. 370 (annotatie op verso/ annotation on the reverse). JOHAN ERIC REHN (1717-1793) Design for the wall decoration of a room in the castle of Drottningholm. 18th century. Mounted. Pen and grey ink with yellow, red and grey wash. Inscription measurements in alnar. The drawing illustrated here perhaps shows an alternative design for the decoration of a wall in Queen Louise Ulrike's library in Drottningholm Castle. Rehn's drawings pose several unsolved problems. A large group of his drawings were copied during his lifetime and it is almost impossible to make a clear distinction between orig. - even if it survives - and copy. Many of the surviving drawings do not bear any inscription that would make a clear identification possible. In good condition.Provenance: Armand-Albert Rateau (inscription in pencil on the reverse 'n°128 bis'): Lodewijk Houthakker (two collector's marks). 228 x 358 mm Lit.: Fuhring, Design into art, nr. 277/ Lugt nrs. L.4273; 3893; 4533. Expo: La Suède et Paris. Paris, Musée Carnavalet 1947, nr. 370 (annotatie op verso/ annotation on the reverse).
