CRISTOFANO DI MICHELE MARTINI, IL ROBETTA The Adoration of the Magi. Engraving, circa 1496-1500. 303x280 mm; 12x11 1/8 inches, narrow margins. Cross on a mound watermark. This engraving is based on Filippino Lippi's painting of the same subject, which dates from 1496 and is now in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. Robetta (circa 1462-circa 1535) also adopted passages from other contemporaneous prints. The hat above his signature, for instance, is copied from Martin Schongauer's Adoration of the Magi (Lehrs 6), as are the heads of the ox and ass to the viewer's right of the Virgin and Child. Meanwhile, the landscape derives from prints by Albrecht Dürer and the sky is based on his Virgin and Child with the Monkey (Bartsch 42) and The Sea Monster (Bartsch 71). The original copper plate for The Adoration of the Magi is now in the British Museum, London, and many extant impressions were printed during the 19th century; earlier printings such as the current work are extremely scarce. Bartsch 6; Hind 10.

Cristofano ROBETTA (Firenze 1462 - 1535) ADORAZIONE DEI MAGI Bulino 312 x 305 mm.

CRISTOFANO DI MICHELE MARTINI, IL ROBETTA Allegory of Carnal Love.

      Est: $2,000 - $3,000

CRISTOFANO DI MICHELE MARTINI, IL ROBETTA Allegory of Carnal Love. Engraving, circa 1498. 300x282 mm; 11 7/8x11 1/8 inches, thread margins. A very good, well-inked impression with strong contrasts. Robetta, a Florentine goldsmith and engraver whose oeuvre consists of approximately 35 engravings executed around 1490 to 1530, borrowed generously from prints by Schongauer, Dürer and Antonio Pollaiuolo as well as paintings by the fellow Florentines Filippino Lippi and Sandro Botticelli. Nearly all Robetta's engravings are pastiches of other artist's works, whether entire compositions or selected parts of compositions. In this print, Robetta draws from landscapes engraved by Dürer, such as Hercules at the Crossroads, circa 1498 (Bartsch 73) and the figure style of Lippi. His ability to access the master engravings of his time points to their contemporaneous popularity throughout the cultural centers of Europe. This frieze-like composition shows two different figural groups. In the one at the far right, the man embracing the woman looks down at the ground at a skull pointed to by a putto directing his gaze downward. This alludes to the popular Renaissance theme of two young lovers encountering death. In the center group is another pair of lovers, in which the male's left arm is bound to the tree by a cupid; he is a captive of love. At the far left is an androgynous male figure, likely a deity of some sort, with foliage covering his midsection, who has the two pairs of lovers entwined in a sash that he has wrapped over his shoulders, drawing the lovers toward him. Bartsch 25; Hind 29.

Robetta (Cristofano), Adoration of the Magi (After Filippino Lippi), 1502-1530.

      Est: £1,000 - £1,500

Robetta (Cristofano, 1462-1534), Adoration of the Magi (After Filippino Lippi), engraving, circa 1502-1530, on laid paper, with watermark of a bindle/key, an excellent but probably later impression on [?]16th century paper, thread margins trimmed to the platemark along the right hand side, unframed, sheet: 307 x 283 mm. (12 1/8 x 11 1/8 in), platemark: 300 x 278 mm. (11 3/4 x 10 7/8 in) Literature: Bartsch, 6; Levenson, et al., 118; Hind, Strauss 10 ⁂ The original copper plate for the present print is held in the British Museum (see reg. no.: 1888,0117.13), with a second work engraved on the reverse showing the Allegory of the Power of Love. Passavant suggested that impressions were made up until at least 1821 from the plate, at which point it was in the collection of Giuseppe Vallardi. It has been noted by Levinson et al. that the general composition of the print was derived from Filippino Lippi's (1459-1504) painting of the same subject from 1496 (See: Uffizi, Florence). CRISTOFANO DI MICHELE MARTINI, IL ROBETTA Adoration of the Magi. Engraving, circa 1496-1500. 303x280 mm; 12x11 1/8 inches, thread margins. Anchor in a circle with the initials LM surmounted by a star watermark (Briquet 478-529, which dates to the early 16th century). A brilliant, richly-inked and early impression. According to Levenson, this print is based on Filippino Lippi's painting of the same subject which dates from 1496 and is now in the Uffizi, Florence. Robetta also adopted passages from other contemporaneous prints. The hat above his signature, for instance, is copied from Schongauer's Adoration of the Magi (Lehrs 6), as are the heads of the ox and ass to the viewer's right of the Virgin and Child. Meanwhile, the landscape derives from prints by Dürer and the sky is based on his Virgin and Child with the Monkey (see lot 9, Bartsch 42) and Sea Monster (Bartsch 71). The original copper plate for this engraving is now in the British Museum and many extant impressions were printed during the 18th/19th centuries; early printings such as the current work are exceedingly scarce. Est: $1,500 - $2,500

CRISTOFANO DI MICHELE MARTINI, IL ROBETTA Allegory of Carnal Love. Engraving, circa 1498. 300x282 mm; 11 7/8x11 1/8 inches, narrow margins. A very good, well-inked impression with strong contrasts. Robetta (circa 1462-circa 1535), a Florentine goldsmith and engraver whose oeuvre consists of approximately 35 engravings executed around 1490 to 1530, borrowed generously from prints by Martin Schongauer, Albrecht Dürer and Antonio Pollaiuolo as well as paintings by the fellow Florentine Filippino Lippi. Nearly all Robetta's engravings are pastiches of other artist's works, whether entire compositions or selected parts of compositions. In this print, Robetta draws from landscapes engraved by Dürer, such as Hercules at the Crossroads, circa 1498 (Bartsch 73) and the figure style of Filippino Lippi. His ability to access the master engravings of his time points to their contemporaneous popularity throughout the cultural centers of Europe. This frieze-like composition shows two different figure groups. Bartsch 25.

Italienische Reproduktionsgrafik 1485-1600. Berlin/München 2009, S. 131, Nr. 9).
