    Feb. 25, 2025

Neapolitan school of the 17th century. Circle of GIOVANNI BATTISTA RUOPPOLO (Naples, 1629 - 1693). "Still life with fruits". Oil on canvas.

    Est: €6,000 - €7,000

17th century Neapolitan school. Circle of GIOVANNI BATTISTA RUOPPOLO (Naples, 1629 - 1693). "Still Life with Fruit". Oil on canvas. Measurements: 100'5 x 47 cm; 112'5 x 59 cm. (frame). The painter has arranged on an elongated surface a ceramic dish full of figs, around which other fruits are distributed. Pomegranates, peaches and a few flowers complete the composition. The fruits, painted with meticulous, realistic detail in warm reddish and orange tones, as well as some purplish tones, are softly illuminated by a frontal spotlight outside the composition. This somewhat theatrical lighting makes them stand out against a practically monochrome, earthy-toned background. Both the composition and the treatment of light and colour make it possible to classify this work in the Neapolitan school of the 17th century, and to attribute it more specifically to Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo. This painter, a pupil of Paolo Porpora (1617-1673), devoted much of his career to painting still lifes, a genre that was born in the Baroque period and became extremely popular. Although it was not the genre most appreciated by scholars and academics, who were always interested in painting history, mythology or religious subjects, bourgeois and aristocrats throughout Europe, but especially in Flanders, the Low Countries, Spain and southern Italy, were extraordinarily attracted by the painting of everyday objects, which they commissioned to decorate their rooms. Fruit and flowers, sometimes accompanied by game, ornamental objects (ceramic, glass or metal pieces, watches, jewellery) and books, became the protagonists of splendid compositions that sometimes attain a high degree of verism and sometimes conceal a symbolic meaning, reflections on the passing of time, life and death or even religious questions. Still-life painting has particular characteristics in the different areas in which it is cultivated. In the case of Naples, it is a genre linked to painting derived from Caravaggio and also, to a large extent, to the Spanish Golden Age school. It is characterised by its formal restraint compared to Flemish still lifes, with dark backgrounds that lend a certain aura of mystery to the composition and violent, theatrical lighting. In his youth, to which the present work may belong, Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo showed a marked inclination towards a "Tenebrist", "Caravaggist" treatment of light, although he would later evolve towards more decorative compositions.

Attributed to GIOVANNI BATTISTA RUOPPOLO (Naples, 1629 - 1693) - Still life with fruit

    Est: €25,000 - €50,000

Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 120 x 97 cm (without frame), 140 x 113 cm (with frame) We extend our gratitude to Mr. Enrique Valdivieso for his assistance in the cataloging process. The composition of this still life, dynamic and full of movement, suggests that it was created during the final stage of the artist's life, probably between 1670 and 1690. This period is notable for the creation of elaborate representations of fruits arranged in various levels on a kitchen table. Ruoppolo demonstrates remarkable naturalism in this still life, featuring grapes, pomegranates, apples, quinces, plums, and watermelons—fruits typical of late summer and early autumn, specifically between late August and early September. The collection of fruits stands out for its admirable technical precision and a warm chromatic palette that faithfully captures reality. The interplay of illuminated elements and shadowed areas enhances the tonal richness and highlights the painter's skill. Of particular interest are the elongated grapes depicted in the upper part of the composition. These grapes, known in Italy as “corniellas, ” are also featured in other still lifes by Ruoppolo, such as the one housed in the Museum of Fine Arts of Seville. (Text extracted from the certificate by Professor Valdivieso)

    Still Nature

    Est: -

Naples 1629/1693 Nothing is more true than the truth, that’s what is said, and it’s true The painting we’re facing is particularly true and try to imitate the realty with the highest mastery The most important artists and in particular those working in Naples in 1600/1700 competed on this attitude. The artistic tension exploded here more than elsewhere creating refined painters that dedicated themselves to the discipline of depicting the truth and the nature that surround us. Fishes, birds, vegetables of any species are the main characters of this world. Nature remains unattainable but the artist make it nearer to us creating simulacrums that can proudly adorn our mansions. It is easy to notice that the most humble genres receive the utmost attentions. We shall not forget that the echo of a short presence of Caravaggio in the town leaded the artist’ minds in a high speculation towards the real. The surprising painting on auction is amazing for the touching trueness that soon turns itself into a poetic reality.

PROPERTY FROM A SPANISH PRIVATE COLLECTION STILL LIFE OF FRUIT WITH FIGURES AND STATUES IN A LANDSCAPE SETTING measurements note 167 by 243 cm.; 65 3/4 by 95 5/8 in. oil on canvas PROVENANCE Possibly in the collection of Don Miguel Martinez de Pinillos y Saenz de Velasco during the early 19th century, but probably acquired by his son Don Antonio Martinez de Pinillos (1865 - 1923), Cadiz; By direct descent to his daughter Doña Carmen Martinez de Pinillos, Cadiz; Thence by family descent to the present owners. NOTE The present and following lot, along with lots 233-242 from the day sale on 6th July, come from the collection of the Martinez de Pinillos family, landed in Cadiz since the late 18th century. Of aristocratic origins, the family descend from the Counts of Villanueva. They were attracted to Cadiz by the wealth in maritime trade and in 1835 founded the Pinillos family shipping company, today one of the oldest in Spain. The company founder was Don Miguel Martinez de Pinillos y Saenz de Velasco, who became an avid collector as well as philanthropist. Under the auspices of his son Don Antonio de Pinillos (1865-1923) the family business prospered further and he added significantly to the family collection, facilitated by the access to foreign artwork through the international network of shipping routes. Particularly important in this respect were the busy ports of Naples and Genoa, the work of whose local artists feature strongly overall in the collection. The present works are offered by the heirs of the late Exma. Dona Carmen Martinez de Pinillos (Gran Cruz de Merito Naval), who was daughter to the principal family collector, Don Antonio. This impressive scene is a collaborative work between one of the leading Neapolitan still-life painters, Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo, and the figure-painter Paolo de Matteis, who was a pupil to Luca Giordano. The painting can be closely compared to another still life by both artists, offered in London, Christie's, 9 July 1993, lot 85, which shares the present painting's large-scale format (244 by 348 cm.) and compositional type, with an extensive still life in a landscape setting, interspersed with figures. Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo was a direct contemporary to Giuseppe Recco in Naples and specialized in large-scale still lifes painted to decorate the interiors of the palazzi and grand residences of his wealthy patrons. Many such works found their way to Spain during the 17th and 18th centuries, where the demand for Neapolitan painting was extremely high amongst the Spanish aristocracy and ruling classes. The figures in the present work are by Paolo de Matteis, who became a protégé of the 7th Marqués del Carpio, Gaspar de Haro y Guzmán, who served as Spanish Ambassador in Rome until 1683, whereupon he was appointed Viceroy of Naples, taking Paolo de Matteis with him as part of his entourage. It seems likely that the present work dates from the latter half of the 1680s, after De Matteis' return to Naples in 1683 and before Ruoppolo's death a decade later (in 1693).

    Est: $150,000 - $200,000

signed lower left G. Ruoppoli oil on canvas, unframed In his Vite dei Pittori, Scultori ed Architetti Napoletani, the art historian Bernardo De Dominici describes Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo as one of the great still life painters in Naples. His pictures were collected by the growing wealthy merchant class and the aristocracy. Ferdinand van den Einden, the Flemish banker, had an inventory of his collection drawn up in 1688 in which there are two paintings by Ruoppolo listed: Game, a Kid and a Goose and Kitchen Ware and a Pile of Loaves. Van den Eiden is also recorded as having paid 60 ducats to Ruoppolo for works completed (see C. Whitfield, Painting in Naples 1606-1705 From Caravaggio to Giordano, exhibition catalogue, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 1982). While he was a master in his own right, Ruoppolo looked to artists of his own and earlier generations for guidance and inspiration. His early works reflect the influence of Neapolitans such as Luca Forte and Giovan Battista Recco, as well as Ruoppolo's knowledge of the Roman still life tradition which harks back to Caravaggio. His later works became more decorative, possibly due to the influence of Abraham Brueghel who visited Naples in 1675.
