      Fête book.- Sandford (Francis) The History of the coronation of the most high, most mighty, and most excellent monarch, James II...With an exact account of Their Majesties most splendid processions, and their royal and magnificent feast in Westminster-Hall, first edition, initial imprimatur f. signed 'Norfolk & Marshall', title in red and black with engraved coat-of-arms (printer's name in red), 30 engraved plates by William Sherwin & others, all but one double-page and mounted on stubs, engraved illustrations, head-pieces, and historiated initials, 'Yeomen' plate with marginal tear at head of fold, plan of Westminster with short tear at foot, just within platemark, but without loss, spotting, occasional marginal damp-staining, lightly browned in places, contemporary panelled calf, spine in compartments, joints splitting, but holding firm, spine ends little worn, corners worn, rubbed and scuffed, [Wing S652], a good copy, folio (text block 442 x 282mm.), In the Savoy: printed by Thomas Newcomb, one of His Majesties printers, 1687. ⁂ A wide-margined copy of this magnificent record of James II's lavish coronation, which set the standard for subsequent coronations. The plates include the regalia, the procession, plans and interior scenes of Westminster Abbey and the coronation itself, the banquet with accompanying seating plan and dishes served (with list in the text), and the fireworks on the Thames (often missing). Provenance: 'Mrs Isabella Drake, her booke, 1712' (ink inscription to front pastedown).

Some pale dampstain, scattered repairs to plate versos including a couple of long closed tears, general fingersoiling and toning, blank corner torn from imprimatur leaf; rebacked, rubbed, edges worn. First edition. This copy with other coronation ephemera laid in, including: The Form of the Proceeding to the Coronation of their Majesties King William and Queen Mary, Edinburgh, 1689 (Wing F1581), and a newspaper account bound in at end. Title printed in red and black with engraved arms. 30 engraved plates, all but one double-page, engraved illustrations, head-pieces and initials, with the initial imprimatur leaf (some splits along central folds, a few repaired tears). Contemporary red gilt-panelled morocco, spine gilt, edges gilt (joints split); cloth folding case. Provenance: Lord Viscount Palmerston (manuscript invoice from "Thomas in Elliott" for £4.04.00 dated 23 June 1739 pinned to title-page). FIRST EDITION, ON LARGE-PAPER, issue with Newcomb's name in black in the imprint. With the fireworks plate, often missing. Sanford's is the first official record of the coronation of JAMES II (1633-1701), King of England, on the 23rd of April 1687. It was commissioned by the King from Sandford, the Lancaster Herald of Arms, but is principally the work of GREGORY KING. It describes the preparations for the ceremony, the regalia, the participants, the robing, the presentation of the regalia, the procession, the protocol, the coronation ceremony in Westminster Abbey and the banquet afterwards at Westminster Hall. At end is bound: Samuel MOORE. "The Proceedings to the Coronoation of their Majesties King William and Queen Mary from Westm.r Hall to Westm.r Abby 11o. Apr. 1689." Patrick Lamb (c. 1650-c. 1709) was cook to James II, and successively to William and Mary and Queen Anne. The magnificent banquet that he prepared for James II is handsomely illustrated in the work in two plates, one showing the table plan, the other showing the inside of Westminster Hall as the feast was in progress. Seventeen pages of the text are devoted to a description of the event.
