      Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Carl Friedrich Schulz (German, 1796-1866) Young boy resting beside a fence with hunting dogs, 1835 Oil on canvas 19-3/4 x 26-1/4 inches (50.2 x 66.7 cm) Signed and dated lower left: Carl Schulz 1835 PROVENANCE: Christie's, Amsterdam, October 26, 1995, lot 344; Private collection, Germany, acquired from the above; By descent to the present owner. The German painter Carl Friedrich Schulz, who was educated at the academies of Düsseldorf and Berlin, had a special fondness for painting hunting scenes. These he produced in a style strongly reminiscent of the Flemish school, with keen attention to light, weather conditions, textures, animal anatomy, and an enviable skill in conveying a rolling expanse of landscape. For works such as the present painting, he gained the moniker ‘Schulz the Hunter.' Much of the inspiration for Schulz's later work derived from his time as a soldier in the Napoleonic Wars, in which he volunteered to serve in 1815. He was appointed professor of the Academy of Arts, Berlin, in 1841, and moved to Russia in 1847. HID01801242017
