The first plate depicts the protagonist travelling through a town square on a three-wheeled vehicle, a form of motorised tricycle. Provenance: William Hartmann Woodin (bookplate).

"Locomotion: Walking by Steam, Riding by Steam, Flying by Steam," a satirical hand-colored etching, ca. 1830, by the caricaturist and illustrator of Dickens, spoofing the development and spread of steam power: a man is depicted walking with a steam-powered leg, and two women ride an enormous teapot, whose spout emits steam that lifts another man's winged flying machine; inscribed at top and bottom with titles, captions, and publisher's information. Image: 9.5" H X 13.75" W; frame: 15.25" X 19.25". Slight discoloration due to age; glass with a large crack across upper left quadrant.

Dedicated to the Utilitarian Society, first edition , the set of 12 hand-coloured lithographed plates by Seymour, some light marginal soiling and creasing to lower outer corner, final four plates a little stained at upper edge, final plate frayed at fore-edge (repaired), with original printed upper wrapper only (stitching and lower wrapper renewed), slightly soiled and frayed at fore-edge (reinforced), preserved in modern green cloth portfolio with ties, black morocco label on spine, [Not in Abbey or Tooley], oblong folio, Thomas M'Lean, 1830. Very rare. Delightful series of plates with suggestions for making life easy, with some rather Heath Robinson-like contraptions such as 'Revolving Hat, which by a slight touch presents its Wearer with Eye-Glass, Cegar, Scent-Box, Spectacles, Hearing-Trumpet without the intolerable trouble of holding them', 'Glass Covers for Noisy Children', 'Duelling apparatus for Gentlemen of weak nerves', 'Apparatus to undress & cover up when sleepy'. Only one copy of this edition recorded at auction , in 2000 and lacking a plate, and an American edition of 1832 published by E.S.Mesier from 1960. COPAC lists one copy only, at Manchester University.
